The wife of former Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) chairperson Wafula Chebukati, Mary Chebukati, has recalled how their daughter, Rachael, received calls from her friends telling her that the former chair was compromised before announcing the results.
Mary, while paying her last tribute on Saturday, March 8, said that August 15, 2022, was a hectic day for them.

She described how she tried to reach Chebukati before and after the chaos at Bomas but with no avail.
“I tried to ring him when the fracas was taking place. Even before the fracas, we tried to reach him,” she recalled.

“We couldn’t reach him because Rachel’s friends were telling her, ‘your father is being compromised. We hear he’s delaying announcing the results’.”
Worried about the safety of her husband, Mary Chebukati stated that they tried to reach Citizen TV anchor Sam Gituku as he happened to be airing the event Live.

“I said, ‘there’s something happening at Bomas. Can you put it on air?’ And he said, ‘I don’t see anything happening.’ In less than a minute, he said, ‘Oh my God. I now can see what’s happening.”

Mary Chebukati Reveals Chebukati was Pointed a Gun At
“He said the only thing he could do for us was to refer us to some human rights institution because there was nothing more he could do. Eventually, I got the aide to take the phone to anybody who was around him. The nearest pastor he found was Bishop Oginde,” she added.
“I asked him, Is my husband alive? That’s all I need to know. He said, ‘Yes, I can see he’s alive.’ I said, ‘You’re a man of God. Please tell the truth.’ He replied, ‘It is the truth.”
After the election results were announced, the former IEBC Chair went home and revealed that he saw someone pointing a gun at him.
“For me that was divine intervention because he came home and he said, ‘I saw somebody point a gun at me. And I think it was the security that pushed him down and then they took him out’,” she said.
During the altercation, guns were drawn and wielded, as security officers attached to VIPs literally exchanged blows.
Chebukati’s daughter, Rachael had also alleged that Chebukati had received intelligence that someone had given orders for him to be killed and blocked from announcing the election’s results.
“On the day, just a moment before he went to Bomas to announce the results, at that time he had already received intelligence that somebody wanted to end his life to stop him from announcing the results,” she said.
Chebukati Received Numerous Calls Before Announcement of Elections
Moments before the 2022 election results were announced, Mary Chebukati narrated that just when Chebukati was trying to leave the house, he couldn’t leave for one reason or another.
Minutes later, Archbishop Ole Sapit called him, requesting assistance in clearing the protocol processes, since he had already decided that he was going to announce the results that day.
“Ole Sapit called in to say he needed him to assist me in clearing the religious team into Bomas because the queues are heavy,” she said.
Mary went on to narrate that on the material day, Chebukati received at least five calls, which he kept saying he did not feel comfortable with.
“When I asked who had called in, because he had received almost four or five calls before that, he kept saying, ‘I don’t like these calls I’m receiving’. So, when I asked, ‘Who had called in?’ he said, ‘It is the archbishop’,” she recalled.
“He explained what he was trying to say, and I told him, please request the archbishop to come home.”

In less than five minutes, a team of 14 religious men drove into their compound.
She told them how every morning she would pray for her husband and stand at the door, saying, “I’m praying for you. I’m praying for your wisdom that God gives you direction.”
According to Mary, that started in 2017, but she told the archbishop that she could not pray that day and requested him to pray for Chebukati as he proceeded to Bomas.
“There was a procession to Bomas and with this gentleman in the middle of that procession and that’s how he got to the Bomas of Kenya,” Mary said.
