Willis Austin Chimano is a celebrated Kenyan singer, songwriter, and fashion icon best known as a founding member of the award-winning Afro-pop band Sauti Sol.
With his deep baritone voice and bold sense of style, Chimano has become one of the most recognizable figures in East African music.

Education
Chimano attended Upper Hill High School in Nairobi, where he met Bien-Aimé Baraza and Savara Mudigi.
Together, they formed a group called Voices in the Light, performing at school events.
After completing his secondary education, he pursued a degree in Journalism and Media Studies at the University of Nairobi, balancing academics with his growing passion for music.
Chimano’s Career Journey
His big break came in 2005, when he, Bien, Savara, and the guitarist Polycarp Otieno came together at the Alliance Française in Nairobi to form Sauti Sol.
The group quickly rose to international fame, fusing Afro-pop with rich harmonies and soulful lyrics.
Together, they delivered global hits such as Kuliko Jana, Melanin, Sura Yako, Suzanna, Insecure, and Short and Sweet.
As the band’s baritone vocalist, Chimano played a crucial role in shaping their distinctive sound, while also showcasing his talents as a saxophonist and keyboardist.
When Sauti Sol announced an extended break in 2023, Chimano transitioned into a solo career.
In 2022, he released his debut Extended play (EP), Heavy Is the Crown, a bold project influenced by 1980s dance pop.
The EP marked a defining moment in his career, giving fans a glimpse into his individuality and creative identity.
In 2024, Chimano released several singles, including Fashion, Do You Remember, Friday Feeling, Freedom, Beautiful Day, Stereo, Mad Love, Loser, Monster, and Hallelujah.
These works secured his artistic adaptability and willingness to experiment with fresh sounds.
He also staged intimate concerts under the brand Chimano Intimates, performing in Nairobi, London, and Paris.
However, not all his shows went smoothly, his planned Love and Harmony Fest at Junction Mall in Nairobi was controversially canceled by police, sparking widespread online debate.
Aside from music, Chimano has earned a reputation as a fashion trailblazer, admired for his daring outfits and unapologetic embrace of individuality.
His style has become an extension of his advocacy, symbolizing freedom of expression and self-acceptance.
In 2021, he made headlines when he publicly came out as gay, a courageous act in Kenya, where homosexuality remains criminalized.
Since then, he has continued to champion LGBTQ+ rights, often emphasizing the importance of living authentically despite societal pressures.
