Nairobi City County has called on members of the public to identify and collect a total of 193 unclaimed bodies from two hospitals in the county failure to which they will be disposed.
The county’s acting secretary and head of public service Patrick Analo Akivanga in a public notice announced plans to dispose of the unclaimed bodies noting that family members have up to 7 days to claim the bodies.
“Interested members of the public are asked to identify and collect the below named bodies within 7 days, failure to which the Nairobi City County will seek authority for disposal,” Analo stated.
In the notice seen by The Kenya Times, Analo revealed that the bodies are currently lying at the City Mortuary and Mam Lucy Hospital.

Moreover, Analo said the City Mortuary has the largest number of unclaimed bodies with 169 whereas Mama Lucy Hospital has the remaining 24.

“The following 193 unclaimed bodies are lying at the City Mortuary 169, and at Mama Lucy Hospital 24, from the date of admission awaiting collection,” the notice reads in part.
Further in his public notice, the acting county secretary and head of public service has given a full list of the 193 unclaimed bodies citing the date of admission to the hospital, admission number, name of the deceased, gender, age, station, and cause of death.
Also, some of the causes of death noted on the public notice include, accident, suicide, murder, drowning, mob injustice, electrocution, and natural causes among others.

According to the Public Health Act Cap 242 of 1991, an unclaimed body should be removed from a mortuary within fourteen days, failure to which it will be disposed of in a mass grave.
However, the act adds that the disposal of unclaimed bodies can only happen after the public officer obtains permission from the court.
