The Office of Chief Justice (CJ) Martha Koome has announced vacancies and asked qualified Kenyans to apply.
In a notice on October 30, 2024, the Office of the CJ called for qualified candidates to apply for two advertised positions.
First, the office is seeking qualified candidates for the role of Member, Public Benefit Organizations Dispute Tribunal, for which there are four vacancies.
The other position available is that of the Chairperson, Public Benefit Organizations Dispute Tribunal.
“The Chief Justice invites applications from qualified persons for the underlisted positions.” the notice reads in part.
Koome announces vacancies in Public Benefit Organizations Dispute Tribunal
CJ Koome while announcing the vacancies noted that Section 50(1) of the Public Benefit Organizations Act No. 18 of 2013 (the Act) provides for the establishment of the Public Benefit Organizations Dispute Tribunal.
The Act came into force as of 14 May 2024 pursuant to Legal Notice No. 78 of 2024 marking the culmination of a lengthy process that began with the Act receiving presidential assent on 14 January 2013.
Following delays in the Act’s commencement, on 31 October 2016, the High Court issued an order compelling the Cabinet Secretary for Devolution and Planning to appoint and gazette the Act’s commencement date within fourteen days of the order.
The High Court on 12 May 2017 subsequently issued a ruling reinforcing the judgement of 31 October 2016 and ordered the commencement of the Act within thirty days from the date of the order.

Despite these orders, the Act was not affected until the recent publication of the Legal Notice that set the Commencement Date.
The purpose of the Act is to establish the administrative and regulatory framework for the establishment and operation of public benefit organizations (PBOs) in Kenya.
A PBO is a voluntary membership or non-membership grouping of individuals or organizations, which is autonomous, non-partisan, non-profit making.
How to apply
According to the notice, all members of the Public Benefit Organizations Dispute Tribunal are to be appointed by the CJ and approved by the National Assembly.
Successful candidates for the positions will have the jurisdiction to hear and determine Complaints arising out of any breach of the Act and Any matter or appeal made to it pursuant to the provisions of the Act.

Also, they shall perform such other functions as may be conferred upon the Tribunal by the Act or by any other written law being in force.
To apply for the positions, Interested and qualified persons have been directed to visit the Judiciary Portal www.judiciary.go.ke for detailed job description.
According to the Office of the CJ, the application must be submitted not later than 15th November at 5.00pm.
“Only shortlisted candidates will be contacted. Canvassing in any form will lead to automatic disqualification,” the notice adds.
Meanwhile, the Office of the Chief Justice has assured Kenyans that Candidates will be selected on merit through fair and open competition from the widest range of eligible candidates.
