The United States Justice Department (DOJ) has confirmed it will investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s financial networks and his associations with major banks and prominent political figures, including former President Bill Clinton. Attorney General Pam Bondi said the department “will pursue this with urgency and integrity,” after President Donald Trump publicly asked the DOJ and FBI to examine Epstein’s “involvement and relationship” with Clinton and others.

The announcement comes amid the release of thousands of pages of documents from Epstein’s estate by the U.S. House Oversight and Government Reform Committee.

The documents, which include emails, legal filings, message pads, and interviews with attorneys involved in Epstein’s earlier civil cases, have reignited scrutiny of Epstein’s political connections and reopened long-standing questions about the extent of Clinton’s relationship with the disgraced financier.

Democrats, however, argue that Trump’s renewed interest is an attempt to redirect attention away from his own extensive mention in the documents.

A review by The Wall Street Journal found Trump was referenced in more than 1,600 of the 2,324 email threads released this week. Representative Robert Garcia, the top Democrat on the Oversight Committee, accused Trump of “trying to deflect from serious new questions we have about his relationship with Jeffrey Epstein.”

Epstein email claims Clinton “never” visited his island

Among the documents made public this week is a 2011 email written by Epstein that directly addresses one of the most persistent rumors surrounding Clinton.

In the email released by the House Oversight Committee, Epstein wrote:

“[T]hese stories are complete an[d] utter fantasy… I don’t know and have never met Al Gore, Clinton was never on the island… the telephone book is not mine, it was stolen by my houseman that is currently in prison for doing so.”

The message was sent to a correspondent identified only as “The Duke,” whose email address is redacted. It appears as part of roughly 20,000 pages of estate documents now in the committee’s possession.

While the documents do not accuse Clinton of any criminal conduct, they provide detailed context as to why attorneys and investigators repeatedly sought his deposition in earlier civil cases involving Epstein.

A lengthy filing by a lawyer representing multiple Epstein victims outlines the basis for those inquiries. According to the document included in the Oversight Committee release, Clinton was known to be friendly with Ghislaine Maxwell, who witnesses described as deeply involved in Epstein’s operations, including recruitment and management of underage girls.

Investigators repeatedly sought Clinton’s deposition in earlier Epstein civil cases

Several news reports at the time claimed Clinton had an affair with Maxwell, a claim never substantiated but frequently cited by attorneys seeking to understand the scope of the pair’s connection.

The documents also reveal that the former U.S. President traveled on Epstein’s private plane on more than 10 occasions between 2002 and 2005, according to flight logs produced in litigation. His aide Doug Band flew on the aircraft even more frequently.

In addition, Maxwell attended Chelsea Clinton’s 2010 wedding, a detail that emerged through a photograph published by US Weekly. Attorneys highlighted this to challenge earlier claims that Maxwell had been outside the United States during that period.

The documents further reveal Epstein’s digital phone directory contained 21 phone numbers associated with Clinton, including those for his assistants, schedulers, and what appeared to be personal contact lines.

Attorneys stressed that they had no information showing Clinton ever discussed any Epstein victims, including “Jane Doe” complainants, or had knowledge of the abuse.

The filing explains that the former American leader was considered a potential witness because his travels and relationship with Maxwell might have provided relevant contextual information, not because of any allegation that he was involved in Epstein’s crimes.

Political fallout

Trump has, in addition to Clinton, asked the DOJ to investigate major banks, including JP Morgan and Chase, along with former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and LinkedIn co-founder Reid Hoffman, a major Democratic donor. The president said the goal is to “get to the bottom of Epstein’s network.”

“I will be asking A.G. Pam Bondi, and the Department of Justice, together with our great patriots at the FBI, to investigate Jeffrey Epstein’s involvement and relationship with Bill Clinton, Larry Summers, Reid Hoffman, J.P. Morgan, Chase, and many other people and institutions, to determine what was going on with them, and him,” Trump on Friday, November 14 wrote on Truth Social.

Democrats argue that the timing is suspect, pointing to the large number of Epstein emails involving Trump himself.

They say the president’s call for an investigation represents a political gambit rather than a good-faith push for accountability.

The Justice Department has not identified any specific individual as the target of its inquiry. A spokesperson said only that investigators “will follow the evidence wherever it leads.”

DOJ is expected to begin reviewing the newly released documents while seeking additional materials from Epstein’s estate, banks, and the FBI’s archived case files. Congressional committees are also preparing to request testimony from former associates of Epstein and previous investigators.

Clinton, who has not issued a new public statement in response to the latest document release, has consistently denied any wrongdoing and said he only flew with Epstein for humanitarian missions related to the Clinton Foundation.
