Meru national polytechnic management has closed the institution after students staged demonstrations protesting the death of three others.
According to reports, the three students were knocked down by a motorist.
In a memo to all the students on March 14, 20224, the management asked them to vacate the college premises.
“Following the recent unrest of trainees on Thursday March 14, 2024, the management has decided to close the polytechnic indefinitely,” read the memo.
Further the memo instructed all students occupying school accommodation facilities to exit with immediate effect.
“All resident students are expected to clear from the institution premises immediately,” the management said.
Despite the closure, the management promised to allow March series candidates to take their examinations upon clearance.

“All March series candidates will be expected to be cleared for exams by the examination officer for them to be allowed in the compound,” the memo read in part.
Meru polytechnic students deaths
On March 8, 2024, business and transport activities along the Meru-Nanyuki highway were brought to a standstill. This was after students of Meru National Polytechnic staged demonstrations over the killing of their colleges.
Hundreds of students took to the streets, barricading the main highway leading to Meru town.
At the same time, the students demonstrated after they received reports on the deaths of three students, allegedly struck by a speeding vehicle.
During the protests, the students demanded justice for their fallen colleagues.
In addition, the students accused the police of being reluctant to arrest the driver who caused the accident.
According to reports, the accident happned on Thursday, March 7, when a speeding car hit down three students. One died on the spot.

The other two students succumbed to their injuries on their way to a nearby hospital. At the time of the accident, the trio was part of a group of students skating on a main road.
