Kenyan students seeking postgraduate education in the United Kingdom have a new opportunity after the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) announced applications for the 2027 Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships, a fully funded program that will support successful candidates in studying at approved UK universities.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission offers the scholarships in partnership with national nominating agencies, including Kenya’s Ministry of Education (MoE).
Under the latest program, the Ministry of Education has been invited to nominate 19 Kenyan citizens for consideration for the awards.
“Funded by the UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO), Commonwealth Master’s Scholarships enable talented and motivated individuals to gain the knowledge and skills required for sustainable development and are aimed at those who could not otherwise afford to study in the UK,” Commonwealth stated.
The Commonwealth Scholarship Commission will make the final selection, and successful candidates are expected to begin their studies in September or October 2027 at approved institutions across the United Kingdom.
Commonwealth Scholarships for Kenyans
Applications for the scholarships will open on September 8, 2026, and close at 4:00 pm BST (6 pm EAT) on October 20, 2026.
Applicants must submit their applications through the CSC Central online application platform, which is the only channel through which applications and supporting documents will be accepted.
The commission has stated that it will not consider applications or documentation submitted outside the online system.
Applicants must also apply through a nominating body. For Kenyan candidates, the main nominating agency is the Ministry of Education.
The ministry will assess applicants and submit its nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission, which will then conduct the final selection process.

The CSC has stressed that being nominated does not automatically guarantee a scholarship award.
Eligibility is limited to citizens of eligible Commonwealth countries, including Kenya.
Applicants must be permanently resident in their home country and available to begin their studies in the United Kingdom at the start of the 2027 academic year.
Candidates must also demonstrate that they would not be able to afford UK postgraduate education without scholarship support.
To qualify, applicants must hold a first degree equivalent to at least an upper second-class honors qualification by September 2027.
Candidates with a lower second-class degree may still be considered if they also possess a relevant postgraduate qualification, usually a master’s degree.
The commission says all applicants must submit the required supporting documents in the prescribed format before the deadline.
Applications with missing documents will be ruled ineligible.
Required Documents
Required documents include proof of citizenship through a valid passport or national identity card, complete higher education transcripts, and at least two reference letters.
References must be signed and submitted as PDFs on institutional letterhead or via email that clearly shows the sender’s details.
Referees are expected to assess an applicant’s academic ability, leadership potential, suitability for the proposed course, and capacity to contribute to development after completing the scholarship.
Applicants must provide detailed academic and professional information during the application process.

This includes all university qualifications, employment history, publications, awards, and referee information.
Candidates must also prepare a Development Impact Statement explaining how their proposed studies relate to development challenges at the local, national, and global levels.
The statement must outline how applicants intend to use the knowledge and skills gained from the scholarship after returning home.
Candidates are expected to identify the outcomes they hope to achieve, explain who will benefit from their work, and show how the impact of their contributions can be measured.
The commission considers development impact a key component of the application process.
The commission generally does not fund second master’s degrees unless applicants can provide a strong justification for further study.
Individuals who have already received a Commonwealth Master’s Scholarship or previously studied for a master’s degree in the United Kingdom are not eligible.
Successful scholars are also expected to return to their home countries after completing their studies, as the scholarship does not permit recipients to switch to graduate visas or other routes to remain in the UK.
Applicants are encouraged to carefully research their choice of university and course before submitting their applications.
The CSC recommends using official UK higher education resources, including Study UK, UCAS Postgraduate and Discover Uni, to identify programs that align with applicants’ career goals and development ambitions.
Nominating agencies are expected to submit their nominations to the Commonwealth Scholarship Commission by December 2026.
Following a competitive assessment process, successful applicants are expected to be notified of the outcome by July 2027, ahead of the start of the academic year in the United Kingdom.
