The Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) revenue from cargo freight dropped to Ksh1 billion in June 2024 from Ksh1.3 billion generated in May 2024, according to a report by the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS).
This is a decrease of Ksh300 million compared to the revenue recorded in May 2024. The decline, according to the report, was attributed to the drop in volume of transportation of cargo via the SGR from 615.6 thousand tonnes in May 2024 to 562.4 thousand tonnes in June.
In the month of May, the company’s revenue was much better compared to the month of February, March and April which posted a revenue of Ksh 981 million, Ksh 976million and Ksh 1.2 billion respectively.
SGR revenue according to passengers
At the same time, the company posted a revenue of Ksh 306 million from traveling passengers in June, which was an increase compared to the month of May when the company posted a revenue of Ksh 279 million from passengers.
In the month of April 2024, the company recorded its best revenue of Ksh 385 million compared to the month of January, February, March, May and June when passenger train operations recorded a revenue of Ksh312 million, Ksh270 million, Ksh297 million, Ksh279 million and Ksh307 million respectively.
According to KNBS statistics, the volume of the cargo in Mombasa Port decreased from 3.4 million Metric Tonnes (MT) in June 2024 to 3.3 million MT in July 2024.

SGR data on imports and exports
However, the export volume surged by 21.4 percent, increasing from 415.1thousand MT in June 2024 to 504.2 thousand MT in July 2024.
The import volume declined from 2.5 million MT in June 2024 to 2.2 million MT in July 2024.
Also, during that year Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) passenger usage rose from 140,840 in May 2024 to 182,332 in June 2024.

Additionally, revenue from MGR passenger traffic increased from Ksh 7.4 million to Ksh 9.5 million during the same period.
Overall, there was a decline in passenger numbers with a drop of 65,000 passengers in the first quarter of 2024.
The cargo volumes also saw a decline, which impacted the overall performance of the SGR.
