A crowd crisis is looming in Raila Odinga Homa Bay Stadium ahead of Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2025, after Raila Odinga Stadium was filled to capacity before midnight, an unprecedented occurrence.
According to videos seen by The Kenya Times circulating on social media, Homabay residents began streaming into the stadium around 9:30 p.m., when police officers at the gate allowed entry.
As soon as they were granted access, thousands of people started flocking to the stadium, with security personnel struggling to manage the crowd.
By 11:45 P.M., the Raila Odinga Stadium, which seats 20,000, was officially full, prompting police officers to close the gate as thousands of residents were left stranded outside, watching from a distance.
Homa Bay Stadium Filled Before Midnight
Homa Bay residents filling the stadium a day before the Madaraka Day celebrations have ignited mixed reactions, with some praising their actions as patriotic, while others claim the crowd was paid to attend.
A social media user on X, Mohamed Juma, said, “Homa Bay just did what’s never been done before, made history in a way no one’s ever seen at a national celebration. Straight-up legendary.” A user named “Siasa Movement Kenya” stated that Homa Bay has made history—something unprecedented and never witnessed before at a national celebration.

Elsewhere, several users voiced differing opinions regarding the crowd.
A user named Marube Kiage remarked, “Homa Bay celebrating Madaraka Day without demanding accountability from a corrupt state is not patriotism—it’s complicity. We missed a chance to say: we won’t cheer for injustice dressed as progress.”
Another user, Anwar Saddat, alleged that the crowd in Homa Bay was not organic.
“A promise of Kshs 2000 for the first 10,000 people to enter the Stadium has forced the people of Homabay to run into the stadium at night,” said Saddat.
About Madaraka Day Celebrations
Madaraka Day is a national holiday in Kenya celebrated annually on June 1 to commemorate the day in 1963 when Kenya attained internal self-rule from British colonial rule.
The term “Madaraka” is Swahili for “authority” or “self-governance,” while full independence was achieved later on December 12, 1964.

For the first time in Kenya’s history, Homa Bay County will host the 62nd Madaraka Day celebrations on June 1, 2025, at the newly refurbished Raila Odinga Stadium, aligning with the government’s policy of rotating national celebrations to different regions to promote inclusivity and devolution.
The decision to host the event in Homa Bay was announced on February 27, 2025, shifting from an earlier plan to hold it in Kitui County, primarily due to the thematic alignment with Homa Bay’s strategic location along Lake Victoria.
