Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua has unveiled a grand plan to breathe new life into Malindi town as a prime tourist destination.
The CS made these remarks during the 2023 annual Italian cuisine festival held at the Kilili Baharini beach resort in Malindi.
Mutua outlined a multifaceted strategy to attract visitors and investors alike.
However, the CS regretted that Malindi town, which was once a key tourist destination, has fallen behind in recent days owing to an unprecedented divestiture by several prominent investors mainly of Italian origin.
Similarly, CS Mutua expressed his commitment to rekindling Malindi’s historic connection with Italian tourism.
Alfred Mutua’s Plans to Revive Tourism in Malindi
Further, the Tourism CS revealed ongoing negotiations to entice Italian investors back to the coastal gem, leveraging its unique charm and cultural richness.

He noted that through fostering partnerships and highlighting the town’s untapped potential, the ministry of tourism aims to revitalize Malindi’s economy and tourism sector.
Likewise, while recognizing the paramount importance of security, Mutua unveiled comprehensive measures to enhance safety in Malindi.
Some of these measures include collaboration with local law enforcement agencies, implementing advanced surveillance systems, and engaging the community in a collective effort to ensure a secure environment for residents and tourists.
Additionally, in a bid to counter security in the region Mutua also announced plans to establish new police stations within the region.
Italian Collaboration with Kenyan Tourism
Nonetheless, CS Alfred Mutua was the chief guest during this year’s Italian cuisine festival at the Kilili Baharini beach resort in Malindi.
The event, organized in collaboration with the Italian trade agency, is part of Italy’s ministry of foreign affairs efforts aimed at promoting Italian food and wine tradition as a distinctive trait of Italian identity and culture.
On the other hand, the event was attended by Italian ambassador to Kenya Roberto Natali.

The Tourism Cabinet Secretary further emphasized that the revival of Malindi is not merely about attracting tourists but fostering a sustainable and vibrant community by providing jobs and other opportunities.
Likewise, Mutua’s strategic approach also includes positioning Malindi and Watamu as Kenya’s top entertainment towns.
He further challenged players in the tourism industry to roll up their sleeves and work even harder at marketing while not compromising on standards.
Mutua on Revamping Equator Signs
Worth noting the Tourism CS Alfred Mutua has been working to revamp the tourism sector since assuming office in October 2023.
Recently the Cabinet secretary pledged to revamp all Equator signages in Kenya.
In a statement then, Mutua emphasized the significance of uplifting the presentation and quality of the Equator signage to attract both local and international tourists.
Mutua highlighted a comparison between Kenya’s Equator signs and those in Ecuador, pointing out the stark difference in quality.
“For local and foreign tourists to pay top shillings for services, we also have to get our act together. The presentation of our Equator signages, for example, compared to that of Ecuador, is low quality. Together with stakeholders, I will fix this shame – Chap Chap,” Mutua affirmed.
