Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife Alfred Mutua has outlined a groundbreaking plan to revolutionize Kenya’s tourism industry.
Speaking to senior officials of the Ministry on Monday, October 16 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC), CS Mutua called for a change in the nation’s tourism marketing strategy.
This was part of the Ministerial Consultative and Stakeholder meetings planned by the CS as part of his commitment to fast track transformative development in the Ministry since the Cabinet reshuffle.
Moreover, the CS’s vision includes diversifying the tourism products on offer.
Mutua further emphasized that the country possesses a wealth of adventure tourism, pristine beaches, cultural heritage, and burgeoning markets such as eco-tourism.
“The world has evolved, and we must adapt to these changes. Kenya is not solely a wildlife destination; it is a diverse and culturally rich nation with much to offer,” Mutua highlighted.
Mutua Calls for Innovative Marketing Strategies
While underscoring the need to break free from the constraints of the current marketing model, the CS noted that Kenya needs a new strategy.
“Our marketing strategies should reflect this diversity and inclusivity,” he added.

Additionally, the former Machakos governor asserted that the prevailing approach, which focuses on a limited range of products and caters to only a fraction of potential tourists, is unsustainable.
He further emphasized the urgency of embracing a more inclusive approach to expand Kenya’s tourist arrivals.
“The current annual tourist arrivals of 1.4 million are insufficient, falling far short of our industry’s true potential,” Dr. Mutua declared.
According to the ambitious target set by the CS, Kenya should aim for five million tourist arrivals by 2025.
Tourism is a cornerstone of Kenya’s economy, contributing 10.4% to the GDP and employing 9% of the total workforce.
Increase in International Arrivals
Notably, international arrivals increased from 870,465 in 2021 to 1,483,752 in 2022, marking a remarkable 70.45% growth.
“In order to maximize our nation’s economic potential and create more opportunities for our citizens, we must aspire to achieve more ambitious goals,” the CS affirmed.
He likened the tourism sector to Kenya’s gold mine, asserting that current strategies are not tapping into its true potential.
Also, the former Foreign Affairs CS maintained that the key to this transformative strategy is close collaboration between various government agencies, tourism stakeholders, and the private sector.
Mutua Highlights Modern Marketing Techniques
CS Mutua also stressed the importance of embracing modern marketing techniques, including digital platforms and social media, to reach a wider audience and position Kenya as a top tourism destination.
Mutua expressed his conviction that facilitating stakeholders in the tourism sector is the duty of his ministry.
Furthermore, the Tourism CS encouraged officials to think outside the box, noting that he welcomes innovative ideas that will ensure a consistent rise in Kenya’s tourism arrivals.
The CS recognized challenges in the ministry including inadequate stakeholder consultations, underdeveloped infrastructure, weak policies, and legal frameworks, as well as low marketing and investment.

“The right human capital is vital in achieving our goals, and we will ensure that all are trained and upskilled to fulfill this critical target of five million visitors,” the CS affirmed.
Moreover, the Cabinet Secretary has scheduled meetings with the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and Wildlife Research Training Institute (WRTI) board members on Wednesday, October 18 at the KWS headquarters.
All these meetings, which run up to Friday, November 10 are part of Mutua’s determination and commitment to fast-track transformative development in his Ministry.
