The death of veteran Kenyan politician Dalmas Otieno has reopened interest in a deeply personal tragedy that shaped his life behind the scenes, the death of his son, Isaiah Otieno, in a helicopter crash in Canada in 2008.
Dalmas Otieno, who died on September 7 at the age of 80 after a period of illness, is being mourned across Kenya as a former Cabinet Minister and influential figure in Nyanza politics.
To those who followed his career closely, the pain of losing his only son abroad remained a defining moment in his personal life.
Isaiah Otieno, 23 at the time, was killed on May 13, 2008, when a BC Hydro-chartered helicopter crashed on a quiet residential street in Cranbrook, British Columbia.
The aircraft fell from the sky and struck him as he walked to the post office to send letters to family and friends.
No Survivors from the Crash
Three men onboard the helicopter, pilot Edward Heeb and BC Hydro employees Dirk Rozenboom and Robert Lehmann also died in the crash.

Dalmas Otieno, then serving as Kenya’s Minister for Public Service, travelled to Canada with a delegation that included his wife and Kenya’s High Commissioner.
Speaking to the press at the time, he expressed both grief and frustration, calling for a full investigation and timely compensation, though he acknowledged no amount could replace his son.
“We lost a future, and a bridge between two cultures,” Otieno said during a memorial service held at the College of the Rockies, where Isaiah had been a student. “The pain is indescribable, but so too is the need for accountability.”
The Last Call
The crash investigation, conducted by Canada’s Transportation Safety Board, faced challenges due to the absence of a flight data recorder.
Still, the engine remained largely intact despite the post-crash fire, offering investigators a chance to reconstruct the aircraft’s final moments.
Otieno had reportedly spoken to his son by phone just an hour before the crash. He learned of Isaiah’s death via an email sent by his son’s friends, before being officially notified by Canadian authorities.

The tragedy marked a quiet turning point for the seasoned politician. While he continued to serve in various capacities, including as Minister for Industrialization and as a long-serving MP for Rongo, he rarely spoke of the loss publicly in later years.
Kenyans Mourn Dalmus
President William Ruto mourned him as a visionary leader.
“Waziri Dalmas Otieno served our nation with honour, integrity, and distinction. He was sharp, progressive, and industrious; a statesman whose ideas and leadership will continue to shape generations,” Ruto said.
National Assembly Speaker Moses Wetang’ula described him as a principled leader who devoted his life to public service.
“I have learnt with deep sorrow of the passing on of Dalmas Otieno, a distinguished leader, seasoned legislator, and statesman whose contribution to Kenya’s political and socio-economic landscape will be fondly remembered,” the Speaker said.
Former President Uhuru Kenyatta has eulogised him as an exemplary statesman.
In a statement on September 7, Uhuru said the former cabinet minister made immense contributions to the nation’s social and economic development.
“It is with deep sorrow that I have learned of the passing of Dalmas Otieno, a distinguished leader who served his country with dedication and humility. Otieno was an exemplary statesman whose career in public service spanned decades,” he said.
