As heavy rains continue to pound various regions, motorists have been forced to cope with flooded roads especially those with compact vehicles.
The aftermath of floods presents an array of dangers, both known and unseen, compelling experts to call for caution and avoidance of flood-prone areas at all costs.
The depth of the water remains unknown, concealing hazards such as potholes, debris, and even fallen power lines which could spell catastrophe for unsuspecting drivers.
Experts Caution on Flood Waters
Despite the temptation to brave flooded streets during emergencies, experts caution against such actions, pointing out paramount importance of safety in flooded roads.
Recent studies conducted by the University of New South Wales shed light on the vulnerability of vehicles, particularly smaller models, when confronted with flood conditions.
Researchers found that even modest water depths could render cars unstable, with currents exerting a force capable of dislodging and carrying them away with alarming ease.
“What was surprising was just how little water it took to make even a large vehicle unstable. They became vulnerable to moving floodwaters once the depth reached the floor of the vehicle.” said Grantley Smith, principal engineer at UNSW.

Understanding these dangers is paramount for making informed decisions and taking appropriate precautions when navigating flood-prone roads.
Unpredictable Conditions
One of the challenges of driving in flooded areas is the unpredictability of the conditions.
Poor visibility caused by murky water makes it nearly impossible to gauge the depth of the floodwaters accurately. Consequently, drivers may inadvertently encounter hazards such as potholes, debris, or downed power lines hidden beneath the surface, posing severe threats to both vehicle and driver safety.
Vehicle Damage
Floodwaters can also pose risks to the safety of vehicles which could cause extensive damage to various components.
Some of the risks include corrosion of the vehicle’s wiring leading to costly repairs. Importantly, the full extent of the damage may not manifest immediately, potentially leaving drivers unaware of looming issues until it’s too late.
Personal Safety
Beyond the risk to vehicles, driving in flooded areas poses grave dangers to personal safety.
Vehicles can become immobilized or swept away by swift currents, placing occupants at serious risk of injury or worse.

Safety Measure
To mitigate the dangers of driving in flooded areas, several safety measures are recommended:
- Maintain clear visibility by defogging windows and using headlights and fog lights.
- Reduce speeds to maintain control on slippery roads and allow for proper braking.
- Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles to facilitate maneuvering and avoid collisions.
- Avoid driving through stagnant water, as it may conceal hidden hazards and have unpredictable depths.
- Disable cruise control to ensure full control over vehicle speed and responsiveness.
However, if you find yourself in a situation where driving through a flood is unavoidable, here are some key tips to keep in mind:
- Maintain a low gear, preferably first, and drive at a slow pace to minimize the size of the bow wave created by the car.
- Aim to stay in the middle of the road unless you can clearly see that one side has shallower water.
