The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) issued a detailed update on investigations into the death of former Cabinet minister and businessman Cyrus Jirongo.
In a statement on January 5, the DCI confirmed that preliminary findings indicate a road traffic accident, with no evidence of foul play at this stage.
“The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) wishes to update the public on the ongoing investigations into the tragic death of Hon. Cyrus Jirongo,” read their statement in part.
Jirongo died on the night of December 13, 2025, at the Kavai area along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
The incident prompted an immediate investigation by the DCI following public concern and speculation surrounding the circumstances of his death.
Multi-Agency Team Deployed After
According to the DCI, a multi-disciplinary investigative team was constituted soon after the incident. The team comprised homicide detectives, officers from the Crime Research and Intelligence Bureau, and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory.
The investigators visited and processed the scene, where they secured and preserved key exhibits and documented physical evidence relevant to the case. CCTV footage from Eagol Petrol Station, located near the scene, was recovered for forensic examination.
“A multi-disciplinary team was deployed to establish the circumstances surrounding the tragic death,” the DCI said in its statement.
In addition to CCTV footage, investigators obtained the manifest of the bus involved in the incident, as well as amateur video recordings captured at the scene. All materials were subjected to forensic analysis as part of the ongoing inquiry.
Witness Statements Recorded
The DCI confirmed that statements were recorded from several key witnesses to aid the investigation. These included Ann Lanot Pertet, the deceased’s wife and the first family member to be contacted after the incident.

“Additionally, Rt. Hon. Moses Wetang’ula, Mr Rebman Malala, and Mr Ibrahim Sambili, who had an interaction with the deceased at Karen Oasis restaurant in the evening of 12th December, 2025, voluntarily came forward to provide the investigators with their accounts of the events,” the statement noted.
The driver of an alleged rescue bus, registered as KCU 573A, also recorded a statement as part of the inquiry.
