The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has summoned Tyrus Kamau Githinji, the driver of a Climax Company Ltd bus involved in the fatal crash that killed former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo on December 13 along the Nakuru–Nairobi Highway.
In a statement issued on December 16, DCI confirmed that detectives are probing the circumstances surrounding the collision that occurred at the Karai area at approximately 2:19 a.m.
DCI Issue Statement After CCTV Review
Preliminary findings by the DCI show Jirongo’s vehicle, a Toyota Land Cruiser registration KCZ 305U, collided head-on with a public service vehicle (PSV) bus, registration KCU 576A, belonging to Climax Company Ltd.
“The collision resulted in a head-on impact that pushed the deceased’s vehicle about 25 meters from the point of impact, while the PSV bus came to a stop approximately 50 meters away,” the statement read.
DCI deployed homicide detectives and forensic experts from the National Forensic Laboratory to the crash site.
They conducted scene examinations, secured exhibits, and reviewed CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station near the accident scene.
The footage shows Jirongo drove into the petrol station at 2:18:40 a.m. but did not fuel. At 2:19:10 a.m., he exited and made a right turn toward Nairobi.
Seconds later, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captured the PSV bus ramming into Jirongo’s vehicle.
Detectives have interrogated Tyrus Githinji, who had earlier recorded a statement at Naivasha Traffic Base.
“Tyrus is out on cash bail pending further investigations into the cause of the crash and any dangerous driving,” DCI said.

The driver is required to report back to Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22 for further police action.
Further Investigations to Follow
Detectives are now focusing on Jirongo’s movements prior to the accident.
According to the DCI, statements are being recorded from individuals who interacted with him on the night of December 12, including those present during a meeting at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.
“Investigations are ongoing, and additional statements will be obtained from passengers aboard the Climax Company Ltd bus and other witnesses. Forensic teams will revisit the scene for further analysis,” said J.K. Marete, speaking for the Director of Criminal Investigations.
DCI confirmed that CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station will be subjected to more review and analysis, stating that they expect the footages to play a critical role in reconstructing the events leading to the collision.

The DCI added that upon completion of the investigations, a comprehensive police file will be compiled and forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for perusal and advice.

In its statement, the Directorate conveyed condolences to Jirongo’s family, friends, and relatives, while assuring Kenyans of a credible inquiry.
