Two people lost their lives while eight others are fighting for their lives after consuming mutton infected with Anthrax in the Endonyo Rasha area of Narok County.
Matthew Nchoko, the sub-county veterinary officer, confirmed that the meat was not safe for human consumption.
Further, the medic assured that the eight people who were rushed to Ngosuani Health Center were out of danger after they were treated and discharged.
Anthrax is a rare, yet serious bacterial disease that can manifest in different forms and mainly affects wild game and livestock.
“The gastrointestinal anthrax results mainly from consumption of undercooked meat from an infected animal which could have been the case,” added Nchoko.

The respiratory form on the other hand poses a particular threat to humans, causing severe breathing difficulties.
The disease’s symptoms include difficulty swallowing, severe bloody diarrhea, coughing up blood and multiple organ failure among others which may be fatal.
Nchoko emphasized the importance of prompt medical attention for those who manifest symptoms of Anthrax. Immediate treatment significantly improves the chances of recovery.
The Sub-County veterinary officer also sent a stern warning to the public, urging them to refrain from consuming meat from animals that have not undergone inspection.
Additionally, he pointed out that proper disposal of livestock carcasses was paramount.
“Proper disposal, through deep burial, prevents the spread of infection to other animals or, tragically, to unsuspecting individuals,” added Nchoko.
He stated that efforts to contain the spread of Anthrax in Narok are underway, with plans to vaccinate all livestock in the area.
Consequently, locals were urged to exercise caution, refraining from any contact with, or consumption of uninspected meat.

The area, bordering the Maasai Mara National Reserve, is home to countless wild animals that roam freely alongside domestic livestock.
Further, the coexistence of these two worlds may have played a role in the Narok outbreak, underscoring the necessity for heightened vigilance and precautionary measures.
