President Donald Trump has revealed new details about his ambitious plan for a multibillion-dollar “Golden Dome” missile defence system designed to protect the United States from foreign attacks.
In a statement on Tuesday, May 20, 2025, Trump said the Golden Dome will cost $175 billion, and it will help block threats from China and Russia.
“Once fully operational, the Golden Dome will be able to intercept missiles launched from anywhere in the world,” he said.
Further, Trump said the system would be completed within three years, before he leaves office. The Golden Dome would be the first US initiative to place weapons in space.

The program seeks to establish a satellite network potentially comprising hundreds of satellites to detect, track, and possibly intercept incoming missiles.
The Golden Dome concept draws inspiration from Israel’s ground-based Iron Dome defence system, which shields the country from rockets and missiles.
However, Trump’s Golden Dome envisions a far broader system, featuring an extensive constellation of surveillance satellites along with a distinct fleet of interceptor satellites designed to neutralize enemy missiles shortly after launch.
Who Will Be In Charge of the Plan?
US Space Force General Michael Guetlein is set to lead the program, which is widely regarded as a central element of Trump’s military strategy.
A firm headed by Trump ally Elon Musk, working alongside software company Palantir and drone maker Anduril, emerged as one of the top candidates to secure the contract for building the “Golden Dome.”
Most of the Golden Dome’s funding is allocated to extra satellites and interceptors designed to identify and destroy these advanced missiles soon after launch or while they are in mid-flight.

What is the Cost?
Earlier this month, the Congressional Budget Office estimated that the space-based portion of the Golden Dome could carry a price tag of up to $542 billion over the next 20 years.
As part of his proposed tax break legislation now under consideration in Congress, Trump has asked for an initial $25 billion to kick-start the program.
