Felix Orinda, popularly known by his stage name DJ Evolve, has spoken about his recovery journey six years after the 2020 shooting incident that left him with severe spinal injuries and long-term physical impairment.
In an interview, DJ Evolve explained that the experience has forced him to rebuild his life and rethink his future direction.
“I have been trying to make use of my time instead of remaining inactive. I also went through a period in the hospital where I lost my voice and could only whisper. Communication was difficult, and expressing myself was a major challenge. Regaining my voice has been one of the biggest milestones in my recovery,” DJ Evolve said.
DJ Evolve Hints at New Career Shifts
According to DJ Evolve, his recovery has helped him relearn life and adopt a new perspective on personal growth and resilience.
In the last six years, DJ Evolve has spent part of his time reading and studying new courses while exploring alternative ways of working, including remote opportunities.

“I have been reading and studying new courses. Since I cannot do what I used to do at the moment, I am exploring other options and hoping to return to some of my normal activities later. Most things can now be done remotely, so I have also been learning coding over the past few months and thinking of ideas I can still work on,” he said.
Despite the challenges, music remains an important part of his life, and he has since developed new interests that he plans to integrate into future work.
What happened to DJ Evolve?
Felix Orinda was involved in a near-fatal shooting incident on January 17, 2020, at a club in Nairobi, where he was performing. He was shot in the neck, an injury that severely damaged his spine and left him partially paralyzed.

The incident left him hospitalized for months, requiring major surgery. He also lost his voice for a prolonged period, and had to undergo a long-term rehabilitation involving physiotherapy and medical care.
He continued recovery after being discharged, with ongoing therapy aimed at improving mobility, speech, and independence.
In the aftermath, Embakasi East MP Babu Owino, who was linked to the shooting, faced legal proceedings over firearm misuse and was later acquitted in 2023 due to evidential gaps, though he stated that he supported Evolve’s medical and rehabilitation costs over time.
5 to 6 years later, DJ Evolve began sharing his recovery journey publicly, noting gradual improvements such as regaining his voice, partial hand and upper-limb movement, and developing new skills, including coding, while undergoing treatment.
