Pressure is mounting on DStv to introduce a dedicated sports-only package as the cost of premium content rises and major events like the football season and World Athletics Championships draw near.
A user on X requested DStv to offer a package that was dedicated to sports only content.
“Hi @DStv_Kenya, with football season & World Athletics coming up, I had to suspend my account,” tweeted user Mildred Chebet Wanyonyi. “In this economy, paying Ksh 4,200 or 7,300 just to watch sports on weekends (and sometimes go offline due to weather) doesn’t add up. When will you launch a dedicated sports package?”
DStv, owned by MultiChoice, Africa’s leading entertainment platform responded to the tweet, acknowledging the concern.
“Hello @NanjalaChebet, your feedback is well noted, and I have shared with our team for consideration,” the company said in a reply. “However, note that we do not air sports only. We have a variety of content in terms of movies, cartoons for kids, documentaries and international news.”
The response showed DStv’s content bundling approach, which has long bundled sports with other entertainment offerings.

But for budget-conscious subscribers who tune in primarily for sports, the lack of a sports-only option remains a sticking point.

The call comes on the heels of MultiChoice’s announcement of new subscription rates for DStv and GOtv, effective Aug. 1.
The changes include a 4% to 7% increase across various packages, while Showmax the company’s streaming service will see a price reduction.
