Police recruitment and training require proper preparation, not just mentally and physically, but also in how you pack.
There are essentials that applicants must have during exercise and training.
The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has outlined all these requirements for applicants.
Here’s a breakdown of what you should pack:
Essential Documents
- National ID/Passport – Applicants must carry the National ID for identification and verification. It is the only proof that they are citizens of Kenya.
- Academic certificates – They must also carry original copies and photocopies of the certificates. The minimum requirement is a D+ (plus) in KCSE general grade with a D+ (plus) in Kiswahili and English.
- Recruitment call letter/admission letter – The screening exercise is normally conducted after the application and shortlisting. Candidates should have proof that they were shortlisted. After the interviews, successful candidates are issued admission letters. They should carry them to the training centres A proof of selection.
- Medical forms/reports – Applicants can also carry their medical reports, where applicable.
- Clearance certificates from the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA), Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), and a reputable Credit Reference Bureau (CRB).
Clothing and Personal Gear
- Training attire – Applicants should wear proper attire during the recruitment process and even after selection. This can include plain T-shirts, shorts, track pants, and running shoes.
- Undergarments and socks – They should have enough undergarments and socks for the training period.
- Casual wear – They should also have casual wear for off-duty hours.
- Towel and toiletries – Successful candidates should also bring soap, toothpaste, toothbrush, deodorant, and a shaving kit.

Footwear
- Sturdy running shoes – Applicants and recruits should have them since they are essential for physical training.
- Sandals/slippers – Successful candidates should also bring slippers for use in the dormitory or showers.
- Boots – NPSC issues them occasionally, but applicants should check the requirements in advance.
Health & Hygiene Essentials
- Basic first aid kit – Applicants going for the screening can carry a basic first aid kit with items such as plasters, antiseptic cream, and painkillers.
- They can also carry personal medication if needed, and they are under medication.

Study Items
The recruitment exercise and training are a mixture of physical sessions and classwork.
Therefore, candidates can carry notebooks and pens for classroom sessions.
6. Wristwatch – Time is of the essence during the screening and training.
