The body of interior designer Jeff Mwathi, who was found dead in an apartment in Kasarani, Nairobi, on February 22, is currently being exhumed from his burial site at his parents’ home in Likia, Nakuru County.
The police ordered the exhumation to fill gaps surrounding his controversial death after preliminary forensic investigations ruled out suicide as the cause of death.
Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations are conducting the exhumation exercise and will conduct an autopsy to determine the cause of death. Government pathologist Johansen Oduor will conduct the autopsy in a tent set up by the grave site.
Other than establishing the cause of death through the postmortem, detectives also want to establish whether Jeff’s body could have gone through the grills of the bedroom window of the house he is alleged to have jumped from to his death. The police are also investigating the possibility that Jeff was murdered before his body was thrown down to cover up the crime and make it look like suicide.

Mugithi musician DJ Fatxo, whose house Jeff was said to have been last, is considered a person of interest. Detectives visited his house for reconstruction and forensic analysis and established signs of a struggle inside the house. They also reviewed CCTV footage that captured the deceased’s last moments. DJ Fatxo has denied involvement in the death and said he would cooperate with investigators in the case.
The Inspector General of Police, Japhet Koome, said on Sunday that the police are doing thorough investigations to ensure justice in the case. “Anyone found culpable will be held accountable,” he added while speaking to the press at his office.
The case has raised concerns about the safety of Kenyans and the need for thorough investigations into suspicious deaths. The exhumation of Jeff Mwathi’s body is a step towards finding the truth and ensuring that justice is served.
