Two villages were submerged after River Nyando burst its banks at night on November 28 after heavy downpour that caused floods.
According to the Kenya Red Cross, the floods hit villages in Ahero, Kisumu County, submerging houses.
“Early this morning, River Nyando burst its banks, displacing families from Kamidumbi and Panadol in Ahero, Kisumu County, who are now seeking refuge along the highway.
The Kenya Red Cross Action Team, in collaboration with the National and County Government, is on the ground conducting assessments to guide our response and support the affected communities,” read the statement.

Floods wreck havoc in parts of Kisumu County
In images seen by The Kenya Times, they displayed the aftermath of the floods that caused serious havoc in the affected towns.
The images showed many houses submerged in water after the heavy rainfall.
Locals could be seen struggling to collect some of their belongings while others watched from a distance.

The floods also spread to the Kisumu-Kakamega Highway, a vital route connecting Kisumu, situated on the northeastern shores of Lake Victoria, to Kakamega.
This has caused sections of the road to become impassable, leading to a significant traffic snarl-up as vehicles were unable to navigate through the submerged areas.
Kenya met issues earlier and latest weather update
Earlier Kenya Meteorological Department’s had warned of heavy rainfall to be experienced across the country of which lake basic region was among them.
“Isolated heavy rain is likely in the Central Highlands, Western Kenya, and parts of the Rift Valley. Some areas could experience intense rainfall, leading to localized flooding. Stay prepared!” Kenya Met said.
Kenya Met also advised residents residing in areas expected to experience floods to be on the lookout for the potential flash floods.
“People leaving downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area,” Kenya Met advised.
According to the latest weather update five-day from November 29 to December 3, 2024from November 29 to December 3, 2024, rainfall is expected to continue across several regions, including the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, the Coast, North-Western, and North-Eastern Kenya.

During the first half of the forecast period, isolated heavy rainfall events are likely over parts of the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and the Coast.
Specifically, the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley will be affected, covering counties such as Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.
The above areas are expected to receive showers and thunderstorms over few places especially during the afternoon and during the night.
