The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a rainfall alert in 19 counties across the country.
In a forecast, the weatherman said the rains will start from 3pm Thursday November 14 to 9pm Friday November 15th.
The advisory number 01/2024, Kenya Met clarified the forecast urgency as expected with a severity of low to moderate and moderate probability of occurrence of between 33 percent to 66 percent chance.
“Rainfall of more than 20mm in 24hrs is expected from Thursday 14th November 2024 in parts of Central Rift valley, Central including Nairobi area and southeast lowlands,” Kenya Met said.
The Weatherman warned that the rainfall is likely to intensify to more than 30mm in 24hrs on Friday 15th November 2024 over Southeastern lowlands and central parts including Nairobi area.
It is projected to reduce in intensity from 16th November 2024 in most parts of the country.
Areas of concern include Meru, Embu, Tharaka Nithi, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Isiolo, Nakuru, Kericho, Bomet, Narok, parts of Kajiado, Nairobi, Machakos, Kitui and Makueni.
Instructions to Residents in Affected Areas
Kenya Met has advised residents in all the mentioned areas to be on the lookout for potential flash floods.
“People leaving downstream rivers and along seasonal rivers should be careful since water may appear suddenly even though it may not be raining within the area,” Kenya Met advised.
Residents are advised to avoid driving through or walking in moving water or open fields.

Additionally, the Weatherman has told Kenyans not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows to minimize exposure to lighting strikes.

“People in landslide prone areas especially over the slopes of the Aberdare ranges, Mt. Kenya and other hilly areas should be vigilant. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” Kenya Met added.

Kenya Met’s Earlier Rainfall Forecast
This comes after KMD shared a weather outlook for the period between November 12 and November 18, 2024.
In the forecast, Kenya Met said rain is expected to continue in several areas, including the Central Highlands, Nairobi, Western Kenya, Lake Victoria Basin, Rift Valley, South-Eastern, Coast, and North-Eastern Kenya.
Further, the Weatherman said isolated heavy rainfall events may occur over some parts of these regions.
There will be warm conditions with daytime temperatures above 30°C likely in the Coast, North-eastern, and North-Western regions.
The Department had also released a forecast for October-November-December (OND) 2024 short-rains season.
