The family of 16-year-old Form 3 student Stephen Mwangi is mourning the death of its kin who was reportedly assaulted by Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers.
The Form 3 student succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital (MTRH).
Mwangi’s untimely demise came following an encounter with Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers in Baringo County, leaving his family and area residents reeling from the loss and calling for accountability.
According to reports, the officers demanded a bribe of KSh 2,000 from Mwangi’s mother, who was unable to pay the full amount.Â
Upon arriving at the scene to aid his mother, Mwangi was met with a distressing sight.

His mother, restrained in handcuffs, was denied basic dignity as she pleaded for permission to use the restroom.
Instead, the officers subjected her to a humiliating ordeal, coercing her into relieving herself in their presence.
In his response, Mwangi questioned the officers’ actions, seeking to understand their motives.
However, his inquiry was met with brutality as the officers allegedly launched a violent assault on the teenager, using blunt objects that inflicted severe injuries, including head trauma and multiple bruises across his body.
Despite efforts to save him, Mwangi tragically succumbed to his injuries while receiving care at the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Stephen Mwangi, a 16-year-old boy, was expected to resume his studies on Monday like many other students across the country.

However, the family’s hopes were shattered when Stephen met a horrific fate allegedly at the hands of Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers.
According to Stephen’s grieving family, his only fault was his brave attempt to rescue his mother, Mary Wambui, from a distressing situation.

It was revealed that Stephen had been transported to Eldama Ravine Hospital for treatment, his condition deemed serious due to the injuries he sustained.
Stephen’s medical needs required specialized attention, prompting his transfer to Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital in Eldoret on Friday.
However, according to media reports, the logistics of his transfer proved challenging as the Kenya Forest Service (KFS) purportedly refused to cover the expenses, citing financial constraints.
5 KFS Officers Detained in Connection to the Death
Baringo County police commander, Julius Kiragu, confirmed that they had received Ms. Wambui’s complaint and that officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations had taken over the assault case.

However, conflicting narratives emerged, with KFS officers alleging that Stephen and a group of youths attempted to attack them, leading to the altercation.
Five Kenya Forest Service (KFS) officers have been apprehended by the Koibatek Sub- County DCI in connection with the unfortunate demise of Mwangi.
This confirmation was provided by Ann Nyaoke, the Baringo County Forest Conservator for the Kenya Forest Service.
Protests have continued at Maji Mazuri in Eldama-Ravine following the death of Mwangi.
