Police in Kericho are inspecting an incident where a 19-year-old girl named Faith Charity Makhulu, a first-year university student, committed suicide under unclear circumstances while at her parents’ home.
Faith Charity Makhulu’s body was discovered hanging from the rooftop by the victim’s mother on Friday.
Upon the mother’s distressing revelation, neighbors and members of the public rushed to the scene in a bid to rescue her, but unfortunately, their efforts were in vain as she had already passed away.
Kericho Police Station was notified of the incident, prompting officers to respond swiftly.
The student is suspected to have hanged herself in the middle of the night when every family member had slept.

According to police reports, the 19-year-old, committed suicide using a manila rope.
“The student identified as Faith Charity Makhulu aged 19 years died after hanging herself using a manila rope suspended from the rooftop at the corridor of their residential house,” read the police report.
The motive of the murder has not been established as the deceased did not leave a suicide note.
However, an administration officer who spoke on condition of anonymity said that the 9-month pregnant student had hung herself after being dumped by her boyfriend.

Makhulu’s body was then transported to the Kericho Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits further examination.
An investigation into the circumstances surrounding Makhulu’s untimely death has been initiated, with authorities endeavoring to unravel the motive behind this tragic event.

In a separate incident on March 26, a 23-year-old Kisii University student committed suicide inside a rental house in the Gekomu area.
He was reported to have spoken to an identified person over the phone before suddenly getting agitated.
His body was later discovered after he had committed suicide.
A 22-year-old student from the Catholic University of East Africa also committed suicide recently after losing Ksh15,000 in a bet.
According to reports, the student had placed a bet on Aviator Game using cash meant for his school fees.
His lifeless body was found dangling from the roof on Wednesday, March 27.
This comes even as various leaders and government agencies persist in their call urging the youth to consider seeking help when stressed.
In response to the alarming number of suicide cases in Kenya, the government and other organizations have set up mental health centers to help distressed persons, including the youth, for free.
In March 2023, for example, the national government announced plans to establish wellness and counselling desks at all Huduma Centres across the country. Organizations such as the Kenya Red Cross and the AMREF Kenya have also dedicated channels for mental health assistance.
