The community around Kisii University in Kisii county reeled in shock after a third-year student committed suicide inside a rental house in Gekomu area.
The 23-year-old identified as Simon Machoka, who until his death was pursuing a bachelor’s degree in animal science, was found dead in the rented room.
Geoffrey Kandi, the assistant Security Officer at Kisii University, confirmed the death and intimated that the cause of his death was yet to be determined.
Anne Nyaragi Ogega, a source close to the scene, revealed that Simon had shared a meal with his roommate on Monday, March 25 and thereafter started watching movies until late into the night.
“My name is Anne Nyaragi Ogega, we are saddened this morning as Inaga village after we got shocking news that a Kisii university student has hanged himself,” she said.

Witness Recounts Last Moments of Kisii University Student
According to Anne’s account, Simon was in touch with an unidentified person through text messages when he suddenly threw his laptop on the floor.
When the roommate asked about his reaction and why he threw the laptop on the floor, Simon reportedly asked him not to worry about the laptop as it was already broken.
“The latter had a chat conversation with an unknown person when he angrily threw his laptop to the floor,” the lady said.
“When asked by the roommate why he was throwing the laptop, he told him not to mind as the laptop has already broken.”
Anne added that upon waking up in the morning of March 26, the roommate didn’t find his friend in their rented room. It was at this point that he decided to trace him, but his efforts were fruitless.
“He went out to find out where he was sadly, he could not locate him. He called his friends to find out from them but could not find him,” she stated.
According to the lady’s narration, the roommate suspected that Simon’s death was as a result of the chit chat with his girlfriend.

Assistant Chief Urges the Youth to be Patient
John Ondande Ratemo Assistant Chief of Kiamabundu sublocation in Nyaura location- on his part- narrated that he woke up in the morning only to receive a call from village elder that Simon Machoka, a student from Kisii University had hanged himself.
“Simon was angry to the extent of breaking a laptop but could not share with his friend,” he said.
Mr. Ondande said that preliminary information showed that Simon’s demise was related to the contents of the messages he was exchanging with the unknown person.
As such, he pleaded with the youth to exercise caution when entering into relationships.
“People should talk to the young generation on relationship issues. Those who have been heartbroken should learn to be patient for God has good plans,” he said.
He expressed his grief that the village had lost a leader who could have had great potential in the society.
Ondande appealed to young girls, urging them that when ending relationships with their partners, they should do so respectfully, avoiding messages that could inflict pain and lead to depression.
