Authorities have apprehended four suspects connected to the arson attack and looting of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) offices in Kikuyu Constituency.

According to a report by DCI released on July 5, the arrests came in the wake of extensive investigations into the incident that saw the offices of Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichungwah’s office set ablaze.

Among those arrested was a 16-year-old Form 3 student from a Kabete school. The boy was identified through CCTV footage which captured him making away with a Bluetooth speaker which was later recovered by police.

Additionally, Paul Kuria Njenga, 23, was arrested in Rironi area of Limuru after being seen pilfering various equipment which he later sold in Kitengela.

Further Arrests on CDF Offices

This breakthrough follows the arrest of Samuel Muiri Ruiyi, 28, a driver at a primary school in Nderi area. A 32-inch television set, stolen from the CDF offices, was recovered from his residence.

Additionally, Ruiyi led officers to his accomplice, Samuel Wanjohi, 23, who was found with another 32-inch Sony TV also taken from the CDF offices.

These suspects are scheduled to be arraigned at the Kiambu Law Courts.

On July 1, two other suspects, Naftary David Njama Gatuota and Joseph Kuru Waweru, appeared in Kiambu court facing charges of arson and malicious damage to property.

Charges on Kikuyu Office Offenses

Along with others not present in court, they are accused of torching the Kikuyu NG-CDF offices, valued at Sh20 million, damaging an NG-CDF vehicle worth Sh2.5 million, and vandalizing the Kikuyu Sub-County Deputy County Commissioner’s office, which incurred damages of Sh600,000.

The offenses took place on June 25, 2024. Both Gatuota and Waweru, who unsuccessfully contested elective positions in the 2022 elections, denied the charges.

They were released on a Sh1 million bond with a surety of the same amount or a cash bail of Sh200,000.

Authorities continue to investigate the incident, vowing to bring all perpetrators to justice.

Police Investigations on Criminals

This arrest comes after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) gave an update on the progress of investigations to identify and arrest the ‘criminals’ who hijacked anti-finance bill protests.

In a statement dated July 1, DCI said groups with criminal minds took advantage of the nationwide peaceful protests organized by Kenyan youth (Gen Z) and devised schemes to cause harm and economically frustrate fellow Kenyans.

“Posing as demonstrators, the bad elements who were also well-organized earmarked several business premises including boutiques, electronic shops and supermarkets, breaking in and massively looting to the detriment of innocent business owners,” DCI said.

DCI explained that it is within its mandate as a criminal investigative agency to investigate and bring to book any persons involved in such outright criminality.
