Former Citizen TV Journalist Lands New Job at International Media

Award-winning journalist and former Citizen TV features reporter has landed a new regional role with global media giant Thomson Reuters. Raquel Muigai will serve as the Senior Visuals Producer for Sub-Saharan Africa.

Thomson Reuters is the world’s leading provider of news and information-based tools for professionals.

Raquel shared the news on her official social media page, stating “I’m happy to share that I’m starting a new position as Senior Visuals Producer, Sub-Saharan Africa at Thomson Reuters!”

In her new role at Thomson Reuters, Muigai will be responsible for overseeing visual production across the Sub-Saharan region, leveraging her expertise in broadcast journalism, content production, and investigative storytelling.

Raquel Muigai Professional Career

Before joining Thomson Reuters, Raquel Muigai worked as a multimedia journalist at Africa Uncensored from July 2022 to February 2025, where she honed her skills in documentary production and data-driven storytelling.

She previously served as a news features reporter at Citizen TV from September 2018 to June 2022.

Raquel Muigai gained valuable experience as a correspondent and reporter with The Standard Group from 2017 to 2018, where she served as the Central Region Correspondent after completing her internship.

She also had stints at CGTN and Mediamax Network Ltd.

At CGTN, she worked as a Digital Media Intern from December 2016 to February 2017, further honing her skills in multimedia journalism and digital storytelling.

Awards Won by the Journalist

Raquel Muigai’s journalistic excellence has been recognized with several prestigious awards, including the KAS Media Africa Award for Local Journalism in 2023.

Additionally, she was the 1st runner-up in Digital and ICT Reporting at the Media Council of Kenya in the same year.

Muigai also received the SDG Awards in the Media Category in 2022 and was awarded the African Climate Change & Environmental Reporting Winner by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance that same year.

She also secured 1st runner-up positions in both Development Reporting and Environmental Reporting categories at the Media Council of Kenya (MCK) in 2022.

Last year, she won the Governance Reporting Award in the Digital Category for a cross collaborative investigative article she did on collapsing buildings in Kenya. 

Raquel Muigai holds a Bachelor of Arts in Communication and Electronic Media.

She is a Corp member for the 2023/24 Report for the World Cohort, reporting on climate change as well as a member of WanaData, Africa’s first peer network of women data journalists and scientists.

Her award-winning pieces, such as Scars of the Vote, The Outrage of Collapsing Buildings and Dry Death, focused on critical issues like post-election violence and climate change, earning her accolades for impactful storytelling.

  3. Dry Death (Citizen TV · November 28, 2021) explored the devastating effects of climate change on communities in Garissa, Northern Kenya.
  4. Silent Killer (Citizen TV · March 21, 2021) addressed the rise of tuberculosis in Nairobi amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
  5. Red-Light Pain (Citizen TV · November 17, 2019) delved into the challenges faced by young women and girls in Mtwapa, addressing issues of abuse, limited options for support, and efforts to safeguard their sexual health.
  6. Life Away from Cuba (KTN News · September 1, 2018) explored the cultural and professional challenges faced by a Cuban doctor serving patients in a new environment.
