Fred Barasa is a Kenyan DAAD Scholar and the current vice chancellor of Taita Taveta University (TTU).
He holds a PhD in Comparative and International Education from the University of Natal in South Africa, as well as a Bachelor of Education in Science and a Master of Education from Kenyatta University.
Fred has vast experience in teaching, research, and management at the university level.
Prior to his appointment, Fred served as the Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the African Council for Distance Education (ACDE).
He has also served as Dean of the School of Education, Arts, and Theology at Kabarak University and held several senior management positions at Egerton University, including as the founding Director of the College of Distance Education.
At Egerton, Fred served as Dean of the Faculty of Education and Human Resources and Chairman of the Department of Educational Foundations.
Additionally, he served as Manager for Academic Program Development and Management at the African Virtual University (AVU) and has been commissioned by various international development organizations and African governments.
Fred has been commissioned by various international development organizations and governments in Africa as an advisor who leads education consultants in quality assurance, program monitoring, and evaluation.
He serves on the Kenya Universities and Colleges Central Placement Service (KUCCPS) board as a Member Representing Public Universities.
Fred Barasa Achievements
Under his leadership as Vice-Chancellor, TTU has transitioned into a specialized University of Mining, Applied Sciences, and Entrepreneurship.

Fred led the 2025 launch of the Affordable Students Twin Hostel, a national government project providing modern housing for 1,680 students
In 2025, he also served as the Chief Guest at the Mombasa International ASK Show, where he committed TTU to a life membership to boost agricultural innovation and visibility.
Fred Barasa has partnered with the Engineers Board of Kenya to set quality standards for engineering education.
