Cherinet Alem Hariffo, who is the youngest IGAD’s Permanent Observer to the UN, reminisced on his journey as he presented his letters of credence to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.
In a statement, Cherinet was delighted to have the opportunity to meet senior dignitaries, something he could not have imagined before.

“Today, March 7th 2025, as I present my credentials as the first ever and youngest permanent observer of IGAD Secretariat at the United Nations, I am reminded of the journey that brought me here.
From being displaced as a child to standing among senior diplomats, this is not what I could have imagined seven years ago as a refugee. But here we are,” said Cherinet.

Professional Career of Cherinet
Cherinet, who speaks six languages fluently and has a wealth of expertise in international lobbying and policymaking, offers a distinct viewpoint to his job. His goal is to uplift others, form deep connections, and help create a more just and equal world where no one is left behind.

In his role as the Permanent Observer of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) to the United Nations, Cherinet focuses on enhancing IGAD’s visibility within the UN system, building strategic partnerships, and mobilizing resources to address critical regional issues.

Prior to assuming IGAD’s role, he worked closely with the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Djibouti to the United Nations, serving as Advisor to the Ambassador.
Education Background
The 24-year-old holds a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science and Legal Studies from Temple University, where his academic excellence was recognized with the “Excellent Research Paper for the Year 2024” award by the Political Science Department.
Currently, Cherinet is pursuing a Master of Public Administration at the University of Pennsylvania’s Fels School of Government, focusing on policy solutions for marginalized and displaced communities.

Beyond his work with IGAD and Djibouti’s Mission, the 24-year-old has held leadership roles in other impactful organizations.
He has worked as a Representative and Head of Partnerships at the Institute for Conscious Global Change.
Additionally, he has served as Youth Representative to the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) for the NGO Committee on Sustainable Development.
