Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has left the country for the United States.
Speaking at a press conference early Tuesday, July 9, Gachagua said his trip was intended to brief Kenyans abroad on the state of the nation following the recent Saba Saba demonstrations, which left several people dead, dozens injured, and widespread destruction in their wake.
“Tonight, I shall be travelling to the U.S. to talk to Kenyans in the diaspora and the international community about the state of the nation,” Gachagua told reporters. “I would have wanted to stay in the country at this very difficult time when our people are under siege, but I have engagements that I’m not able to postpone.”
Gachagua, who now leads the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), also claimed unnamed individuals connected to President William Ruto had threatened to block his departure.

“I have been threatened by people close to Ruto that they will prevent me from leaving,” he alleged.
The former DP’s U.S. trip would have marked his first foreign tour since his ouster in October 2024.
Gachagua US Tour
Gachagua, now at the helm of the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), is set to visit multiple U.S. cities between July and August.
Throughout his visit, he plans to engage with Kenyans living abroad through a series of town hall meetings and community events, where he’ll share his vision and seek to rally support from the diaspora.

In addition to these gatherings, the former deputy president is slated to meet with a select group of American entrepreneurs and investors, as part of his broader strategy to present the opposition as a compelling choice ahead of the 2027 elections.
Gachagua’s visit follows closely on the heels of Matiang’i’s recent international outreach, which kicked off his 2027 presidential campaign. Matiang’i began his diaspora tour in Texas, hosting a town hall event in Irving over the weekend.
Held at DFW Celebrations, the meeting attracted a vibrant and diverse group of Kenyans from the Dallas–Fort Worth region.
Attendees came out in large numbers, keen to hear his proposals and understand how the diaspora might play a role in shaping Kenya’s political future.
