Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga has nominated Danish Otieno Onyango as the county’s new deputy governor following the resignation of Joseph Oyugi Magwanga in late February.
In a statement dated March 16, Wanga announced Onyango’s nomination. Onyango, who was serving as the County Executive Committee member for Roads and Public Works, will retain his current role while taking on the responsibilities of deputy governor, pending approval by the county assembly.
“Pursuant to a vacancy in the office of the deputy governor in Homa Bay following the resignation by the previous holder, and in compliance with the County Government Act, I do hereby nominate Danish Otieno Onyango to serve as the deputy governor, subject to approval by the county assembly,” the governor stated.
Danish Onyango Appointed Homa Bay Deputy Governor
Danish Onyango, upon his approval by the county assembly, will take the position that fell vacant in late February following the resignation of Oyugi Magwanga.
He hails from Kabondo Kasipul constituency and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Economics, Political Science, and Public Administration from the University of Nairobi, as well as a Master of Arts in Development Studies.
In addition to serving as the Homa Bay County Executive Committee Member for Roads and Public Works, he previously served as acting CECM for Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Development (Dec 2025).
According to Wanga, Dannish Onyango has overseen the expansion of Homa Bay’s road network, including the opening of 736 kilometres of new roads in the 2024/25 financial year, as well as the routine maintenance of 538 kilometres and the rehabilitation of 116 kilometres of access roads.
The projects have improved connectivity to schools, health facilities, markets, and beaches.

Wanga Makes Announcements On Other Nominations
Governor Wanga nominated Elijah Obiny Dedo from Ndhiwa Constituency as the County Executive Committee Member in charge of Trade, Industry, Tourism, Marketing, and Co‑operative Development.
He holds a BA in Sociology from the University of Nairobi and an Executive MBA. He previously served as CEO of Kenya Bankers Sacco and as chief officer in the same department, where he registered 127 new co‑operatives, revived existing ones, grew membership from 29,000 to 40,000, and expanded assets from KSh 200 million to KSh 500 million.
Isaac Victor Ongiri from Kasipul Constituency was also nominated to serve as County Executive Committee Member for Governance, Administration, Communication, and Devolution.
He has served the county since 2023 as chief officer in the same department and previously worked as a director in Kisii and Makueni Counties.

In addition, he holds a degree in Communications and Public Relations from Moi University and a master’s in international relations from the University of Nairobi.
Joseph Aloo was reassigned as County Executive Committee Member in charge of Agriculture, Irrigation, and Livestock Development, moving from Trade, Industry, Tourism, Marketing, and Co‑operative Development.
He will also retain oversight of Trade, Water, and Sanitation. His previous work in these portfolios has been credited with significant positive impact, and he is expected to focus on key agricultural value chains, including cotton, sugar, millet, maize, rice, sweet potatoes, pineapples, edible oils, and livestock.
Wanga directed the County Secretary to oversee smooth handover processes.
