Kajiado Governor Joseph Ole Lenku has been fined a Ksh 500, 000 by the Senate Roads, Transportation, and Infrastructure Committee.
The fine was announced by the committee’s chair, Senator Karungo Thang’wa, who was speaking to the media in Kajiado County on Monday, November 27.
According to the Kiambu Senator, the fine was due to the governor’s lack of honoring summons to appear before the House Committee.
“Today we were expecting the Governor of Kajiado, because we want him to produce evidence, documents and information about Kisaju,” said Thang’wa.
Notably, this was after a petition on access to title deeds for properties at Jamii Bora Estate in Kisaju was tabled before the Senate by property owners.
“We wrote several letters telling the Governor to provide information on the matter. We only received a call about his absence 45 minutes before the meeting started,” he added.

Lenku Summoned
The senator further revealed that the Committee decided to summon Lenku after he had snubbed all reminders addressed to him.
Additionally, Thang’wa saidt failure to appear before the Senate Committee is punishable by a fine not exceeding a half a million sum or an arrest.
However, Thang’wa stated that the Committee had opted to fine the Kajiado governor a suspended sentence, which shall be effective on Thursday, November 30 if he fails to appear before the senate committee.
“The governor should pay the money in person, but since it is a suspended sentence, it shall take effect on Thursday 30th November,” the senator stated.
Representatives of Jamii Bora on the other hand lamented that the County Government was playing games with them over the title deeds.

“We’ve been held in suspense for close to twenty years and we have confidence in the committee to help resolving this issue,” said one of the representatives.
Furthermore, the company added that they had faith in the committee to help them avoid a situation similar to Mavoko land row which saw demolitions of property.
According to Thang’wa affected persons had travelled all the way from Kajiado to seek answers from the Governor.
