Govt Announces Major Goodies for Raila’s Strongholds

The government through the office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary (OPCS), Musalia Mudavadi in conjunction with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration (MINA) on Monday, October 28 announced that it will embark on a series of inspecting development projects along regions of Nyanza and Western which are perceived to be affiliated to opposition leader Raila Odinga.

This move is also part of the government’s broad-based initiative to ensure that every region counts when it comes to matters of development.

In a statement, the government announced that it embark on phase two of verification and validation of selected High Impact National Government Projects and Programmes in Nyanza and Western Regions

“Office of the Prime Cabinet Secretary (OPCS) in conjunction with the Ministry of Interior and National Administration (MINA) will from Monday, 28th October to Thursday, 31st October 2024, embark on phase two of verification and validation of selected High Impact National Government Projects and Programmes in Nyanza and Western Regions.

The exercise, which is supported by the Public Finance Management Reforms Secretariat (PFMR), started last month with phase one conducted in Eastern and Coast Regions. Phase three and four will be in Rift valley, Nairobi, Central and Northeastern Regions, part of the statement read.

Mudavadi office to inspect development projects in Western and Nyanza  regions

According to the office of the OPCS, this countrywide exercise is to verify and validate the status of High Impact-selected Projects and Programmes for the Financial Year 2023/2024, taking into consideration the information provided by the Ministries Departments and State Agencies (MDAs).

The following projects and programs are underway in the Nyanza and Western regions:

1. Edible Oil Value Chain Project: This initiative aims to improve the production and processing of edible oils.

The project plans to produce 250,000 palm seedlings, along with 496 metric tons (MT) of certified seeds and seedlings, which include canola, sunflower, and soybean. To date, 486 MT of sunflower seeds have been distributed to farmers in Kakamega, Bungoma, Siaya, Homa Bay, and Migori counties.

2. Cotton Production Expansion: The government is expanding the acreage under cotton production from 26,000 acres to 200,000 acres and providing BT cotton seeds in Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Busia, and Bungoma counties.

3. Affordable Housing Construction: The government is constructing 200,000 affordable housing units annually in the Western and Nyanza regions.

Currently, construction in South Maragoli and Lurambi around the Milimani area is 44% complete.

The affordable housing project in Funyula is in the redesign stage. Completed projects include 2,384 units in Lumumba, 882 units in Alego Usonga, 60 units in Mabera, and 249 units in Nyaribari Masaba.

4. Expansion of Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET): This expansion includes several institutions across various counties. The institutions are:

   – Kitutu Chache TVC in Kisii County

   – Kisumu NP in Kisumu County

   – Sikri Technical Training Institute (TTI) in Homa Bay County

   – Uriri TVC in Migori County

   – Musakasa TTI in Bungoma County

   – Sigalagala NP in Kakamega County

   – Bunyala TVC in Busia County

These initiatives aim to enhance agricultural productivity, housing, and vocational training in the regions.
