The Kenya Railways has issued a public notice on payment of rent for its assets and encroachment into the Corporations land.
The notice issued on April 16 directed all tenants and licensees of Kenya Railways (KR) assets to ensure that rent payment is up to date.
They also noted that evidence of payment should be presented to the Corporation’s nearest offices in Nairobi, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kisumu and Eldoret and a receipt issued.
“Take note that the Corporation will take appropriate action as provided for in the Tenancy Agreement on failure to regularize the accounts,” the notice read in part.
Besides, the corporation directed that the payments should be made via the E-citizen platform following the procedure described below.
1.Dial USSD Code *222#
2.Select Make Payments Option
3.Enter KRC123 as the service code.
4.Enter serial number (say xxxx) as the KRC Real Estate Reference. (Confirm individual serial number from Kenya Railways offices)
5.Enter amount then select option 1 to confirm.
6.Enter your MPESA pin.
Encroachment Into Kenya Railways Lands
Additionally, KR warned Kenyans against settling or establishing business premises on the parcels of land owned by the Corporation.
They emphasized that encroaching into public land is an offence and individuals found guilty can face the wrath of the law.
“In addition, the Corporation has noted instances of encroachment whereby members of the public have settled or set up business units on our railway operational corridor,” the notice read.

“We hereby notify members of the public that encroachment on the railway operational corridor is an offence punishable by law.”
The operational corridor in question lies along the Mombasa to Suswa Standard Gauge Railway line corridor and Mombasa- Kisumu Malaba Meter Guage railway corridor.
It also has branch lines to Nakuru Kisumu, Voi Taveta, Nairobi – Nanyuki, Gilgil Nyahururu, Kisumu Butere, Eldoret Kitale, Konza Magadi and railway sidings.

KR Mandate & Railway Lines
KR is a State Corporation in the Ministry of Roads and Transport established in 1978 under the Kenya Railways Corporation Act (Cap 397) of the laws of Kenya.
It took over the railways section in Kenya after the collapse of the East Africa Community in 1977 which managed the East African Railways and Harbors Corporation.
The railway system in Kenya consists of both the Meter Gauge Railway (MGR) and the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR).
The MGR extends from Mombasa to Malaba with Branch Lines to Nanyuki and Kisumu while SGR Extends from Mombasa to Naivasha.
