Gov’t Reveals Tax-Free Millions Uhuru Pockets as Retirement Benefits

Government spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has revealed the benefits the government pays former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Speaking during a press conference, Mwaura revealed that the government paid the former president Uhuru a lump sum of Ksh48 million, which is equivalent to his one year’s salary after retirement.

In addition, the former Presidents receives Ksh1.6 million monthly pensions and allowances amounting to Ksh1 million.

“Additionally, he receives a monthly pension of Ksh 1.6 million, and monthly allowances of Ksh 1 million including entertainment allowance of Ksh 200,000, a monthly house allowance of Ksh 300,000, a fuel allowance of Ksh 200,000 per month, and a monthly allowance of Ksh 300,000 for water, electricity, and telephone services,” reads part of the statement by the Government Spokesperson.

Furthermore, the former president now enjoys a furnished office space, courtesy of the government. He is also entitled to two new cars every three years, with engine capacities of at least 3000cc, and two other vehicles with 3,400cc engines.

The state covers the cost of these vehicles, with replacements scheduled in the 2027/2028 budget year.

Kenya’s Fourth President Uhuru Kenyatta is also entitled to four state-funded vehicles, while former First Lady Mama Ngina Kenyatta receives half of a retired president’s benefits as the spouse of a former head of state- according to Mwaura’s statement.

Together, they have a total of 12 vehicles, including SUVs and luxury cars, provided and maintained by the government. Fuel cards are also supplied for their vehicles.

“To address concerns about the size of delegations accompanying the former president during his engagements, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs recommended a lean delegation of 10 staff for his international engagements. This includes one private secretary. one Aide de Camp, one doctor, one advisor, one protocol officer, one hospitality officer, two security officers, and two media/press persons,” Mwaura said.

The government further covers repairs and maintenance costs for the vehicles assigned to the former president and First Lady upon request. In the 2023/2024 fiscal year, four vehicles underwent approved servicing and maintenance at the state’s expense.

Mwaura also clarified that the former head of state’s staffers are well paid and well taken care of.

“I wish to confirm that the office of the retired third president has staffers well paid, with some at higher job groups, the level of a Principal secretary,” Mwaura stated.

Uhuru Rejects Office Space

The statement came on the back of reports stating that the former president Uhuru Kenyatta rejected the office that he was recently given by the Kenya Kwanza government.

In April, reports emerged that Uhuru rejected the office formerly assigned to former President Mwai Kibaki in Nyari.

While addressing questions about the office standoff, State House Spokesperson Hussein Mohamed said the office was available for use for the retired president.

“There’s an office complex in Nyari that was used by President Mwai Kibaki. It is very well known that it is there and it’s vacant and President Uhuru Kenyatta can use that office as and when he deems fit,” Mohamed said.
