Imagine proposing to the love of your life, setting a wedding date, and then being forced by fate to bury them on the day you were meant to exchange vows.
This is the heartbreaking story of Stanley Macharia Mbogo, whose fiancée, Nancy Muthoni Kinuthia, passed away just 11 days before their planned wedding on Saturday, August 17, 2024.
The day that was supposed to be the happiest of their lives turned into her burial date, filled with bittersweet memories of a love story that didn’t end with the proverbial ‘happily ever after.’
“We know that even if Nancy didn’t fulfill her plans here on earth, she fulfilled them in heaven, and we pray that God continues to give strength to Stanley, her husband,” said one of the clergy members.
Stanley and Nancy had shared a life together for the last 26 years and were looking forward to formalizing their union at their dream wedding.
However, fate had other plans as Nancy suddenly fell ill and passed away. In her honor, the family decided to proceed with her burial on the same day they had planned to wed.
Why Family Buried on Wedding Day
The funeral ceremony, held at ACK Church Gokio, was akin to a church wedding. Stanley donned his wedding suit, and his bride, lying in the coffin, was dressed in her wedding gown, complete with a veil.
Additionally, the bridal party dressed according to the wedding theme. But where there should have been cheers of celebration, there were tears of mourning for the life of their loved one who was taken too soon.
“On what was supposed to be her wedding day, it turned out to be her funeral instead, so that her joy could be complete. That’s why we wore these wedding clothes and came here today,” said Nancy Mwangi, the Maid of Honor.

One of the attendees remarked that Nancy had never been sick before and expressed his shock when she was admitted to Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).
“I had never seen her sick, but it happened. When I saw Ken’s father take her to the hospital, I was worried. On the third day, when I was told she had been taken to Kenyatta National Hospital, I was so shocked, and I didn’t wait for him to tell me what had happened,” he said.

Groom’s Words After Burial
An emotional Stanley said that Nancy’s death came as a shock, as she had been eagerly looking forward to their wedding.
He explained that the wedding was meant to be a special celebration, but God had different plans, leading to her burial on the same day.
“Nancy was eagerly awaiting our wedding because we had finished raising our children, and even the grandchildren were supposed to attend. But none of that happened. However, today is the day of the wedding planned by God, the one to bury her,” he said.
