In a heartfelt and unconventional ceremony, the residents of Kirinyaga County came together to celebrate the life and love of Martin Gitari, a man who tragically passed away just a week before his planned wedding.
In a touching tribute, Martin’s family, led by his sister Pear Wambui, decided to merge the burial and wedding ceremonies to honor his wishes.
“We are celebrating two occasions, burying him and at the same time celebrating his marriage,” said Wambui.
Beatrice Muthoni, Martin’s devoted fiancée was left to mourn the loss of her partner but found solace in honoring their love story.
Their wedding, initially slated for Saturday, April 6th, 2024, was to happen at the same church where the funeral was held, Our Lady of Consolata Rukenya Church in Gichugu.
The Community gathers to celebrate Martin’s life & love
Under the watchful eye of Father Sammy Njoroge, the community gathered to celebrate Martin’s life and fulfil his final wishes.
“This is my first such occasion since I became a priest, and we have done exactly what he wanted,” remarked Father Njoroge.

The joyous ceremony was filled with song, dance, and the cutting of a wedding cake, creating a lively atmosphere amidst the sadness.
The peculiar event, started with a visit to the mortuary, where Martin’s fiancé Muthoni placed a wedding ring on Martin’s finger, symbolizing their eternal bond and the dreams they shared.

The ceremony was later moved to the church, where Beatrice further commemorated their love by having a ring on her finger by her grandson, Felix Gitari, symbolizing the presence of her late partner.
Beatrice explained that placing the wedding ring on Martin’s finger was a cherished moment for her that filled her with a blend of happiness and sadness.
“My grandson Felix Gitari was the one who put the wedding ring on me to represent his grandfather as my husband. I’m happy and, at the same time, sad,” she shared.
Martin’s brother gives his sentiments
Daniel Githaka, Martin’s brother, expressed the family’s sentiments, emphasizing the dual nature of the occasion as a celebration of love and a farewell to a beloved family member.
“Today we are celebrating two occasions for my late brother because he had already planned his wedding, but unfortunately, he died before the wedding day,” said Daniel.

After the “wedding,” she changed her attire before joining the community in laying Martin to rest in Gichugu.
