Transitional Presidential Council of Haiti has named Garry Conille as the new prime minister to lead the country until elections for a new president can be held.
The Council unveiled Conille as the Prime Minister on Tuesday, May 28, evening and tasked him with leading the country out of its current crisis.
Speaking to the press, Council member Louis Gérald Gilles said six out of seven council members with voting power chose Conille earlier.
He said one member, Laurent St. Cyr, was not in Haiti and therefore did not vote.
His appointment follows nearly a month after a coalition within the divided transitional council attempted to select a different candidate for the position.
Conille Experience
Conille, 58, is fluent in English, French and Creole with a 25-year experience working for the United Nations and other aid agencies.
He has served as UNICEF’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023.
Besides, he previously served as Haiti’s prime minister from October 2011 to May 2012 during another period of crisis following the devastating 2010 earthquake which killed 316,000 people.
Reports indicate that Conille resigned only four months later after he clashed with then-President Michel Martelly over an investigation into corruption involving contracts to rebuild the country.
He is a doctor by training and also received a master’s degree in public health from the University of North Carolina.
Conille succeeds Michel Patrick Boisvert, who was named interim prime minister after Ariel Henry resigned as the head of the Caribbean’s nation government on March 12.

Kenya Police Haiti Mission
Conille takes over just as a U.N-backed security mission led by Kenyan police is scheduled to begin operations in the violence-torn Caribbean nation.
The Kenya police will lead the security mission to restore political stability and tackle armed gangs who control large parts of the capital, Port-au-Prince.
Speaking on May 24, Kenya’s President William Ruto said another team of police officers will arrive in Haiti in about three weeks.
Ruto said his government has already sent the first team, adding that the second team will be deployed only after serious ground assessment and assurance.

“Once we have that assessment that we agreed with the Haitian police and the Haitian leadership, we are looking at the horizon of between three weeks and there about for us to be ready to deploy, once everything on the ground is set,” Ruto added.
This implies that the latest they can arrive in Haiti is June 15th.
Apart from Kenya, other countries that will send officers to Haiti are Chile, Jamaica, Paraguay, Burundi, Chad, Nigeria and Mauritius.
