Residents of a Joska apartment block have recounted the tense final moments of Vincent Ochieng, the man police linked to the armed robbery at Chaiiwali Café in Nairobi’s Westlands area, saying he refused to surrender despite repeated orders from officers surrounding his house.
Neighbors said the drama unfolded as heavily armed police arrived at the apartment and moved to Ochieng’s door during an operation that brought a days-long manhunt to an end.
Police had been investigating the July 4 robbery at Chaiiwali Café where armed men stormed the restaurant and robbed patrons of phones and a laptop before escaping on motorcycles.
Chaiiwali Robbery Suspect’s Last Moments
One neighbor of Vincent Ochieng who witnessed the operation said police ordered the suspect to open the door, but he declined.
“When we got to the door, one of the police officers told him to open it. The man shouted from inside that he would not open the door. He told the officers to come in and face him,” the neighbor recalled.
The resident said that it was the first time he had heard the voice of the man the police were pursuing.
The witness further said Ochieng told officers to open the door themselves because he had no intention of surrendering.

As the standoff intensified, police began warning residents to move away from the area.
According to the neighbor, one officer advised him to lock his house and leave because officers did not know whether the suspect might emerge armed.
“One officer then told me, ‘If you live here, lock your house and leave. It is not safe up here. We do not know what that man might come out holding in his hand,’ the witness recalled.
Residents said tension quickly spread through the building as officers established control of the area and prepared for a possible confrontation.
Some tenants reportedly remained indoors while others moved away after receiving warnings from police.
Moments later, after the ordered evacuation, gunfire rang out.
Police later said Ochieng allegedly opened fire when officers moved in to arrest him, leading to an exchange of gunfire in which he was fatally shot.
“The suspect has been linked as one of the four suspects who attacked a restaurant withing General Mathenge Springvalley. That is the robbery that happened in broad daylight,” said Matungulu Police Commander Peter Gichohi.
The operation took place about 10 days after the robbery at Chaiiwali Café.
For many residents, the operation came as a shock.

Several neighbors said they had no idea the man living among them had become the subject of a major police investigation linked to one of Nairobi’s most talked-about robberies in recent weeks.
Chaiiwali Restaurant Owner Speaks
The robbery at Chaiiwali Café in Nairobi’s Westlands area took place on the night of July 4, 2026, and was captured on CCTV cameras.
According to investigators, armed robbers arrived at the restaurant on two motorcycles at about 10.35 pm and targeted customers seated outside.
The suspects, who were armed with pistols, moved from table to table stealing valuables before making their escape.
Chaiiwali Café manager Bedar Ichami said the attackers appeared to have targeted customers’ personal belongings rather than the business itself.
“I think they targeted the personal effects of our clients because they just came, threatened people, and when our customers ran in, they started picking their phones and the laptop and ran away with them,” he said.
Ichami also said phone-snatching incidents had become increasingly common in the neighborhood even before the armed robbery.
“We have several clients who have lost their phones. A client walks out speaking to somebody or ordering an Uber, gets his phone snatched, and also people around here. You can’t go around talking on the phone freely,” he said.
Police are still pursuing other suspects believed to have participated in the robbery.
