More than 400,000 Kenyan teachers and their dependents will transition to the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme starting December 1, 2025, replacing the existing Minet Insurance cover.
The shift comes after the Teachers Service Commission (TSC) reached an agreement with the teachers’ union, ending months of uncertainty over the future of teachers’ health benefits.
Teachers will be enrolled in the Public Officers Medical Cover, a scheme popular with civil servants.
Under the scheme, teachers will have access to outpatient and inpatient services, as well as specialized care, including dental and optical services, annual check-ups, ambulance services for both road and air emergencies, and overseas treatment, among other benefits.
How Teachers Can Add and Remove Dependents on the SHA Portal
Under SHA, a principal member can declare a spouse and up to five children as dependents.
Children are covered up to 25 years of age if they are wholly dependent on the principal member and enrolled in full-time post-secondary education.
A child with disability who is wholly dependent on the principal member – in this case, there shall be no age limit for coverage of a person with disability declared as a dependent of the principal member.
Additional children beyond the five allowed can be included by paying an extra premium.

Teachers and their dependents can register for the Social Health Authority (SHA) scheme through multiple convenient channels:
1. Web Self-Registration
Open your web browser and visit the SHA website: https://sha.go.ke/
Click “Register” and follow the prompts to complete the registration process.
2. USSD Self-Registration
Dial *147# on your mobile device.
Follow the prompts and accept the SHA terms and conditions to complete registration.
3. Assisted Enrolment
Assisted registration is available at SHA branches, Huduma Centres, and TSC County and Subcounty offices.
Registration and Updating of Beneficiaries
A teacher can visit the official SHA website: https://sha.go.ke. Log in using your National ID number and password.
After logging in, click on the “My Profile” tab. Select “Dependents” to view or manage your dependent list.
To add or update dependents, teachers must provide the required documentation:
Spouse: National ID and proof of marriage. Please provide your spouse’s phone number—an OTP (One-Time Password) will be sent to them for their consent.
Child: Birth notification or certificate
Adopted Child: Adoption order
Child under Guardian: Will, deed, court order, or other document recognized under the Children’s Act.
Person with Disability-ID and Certificate of Registration from the National Council for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD).
Persons under lawful custody-Prison admission number, remand identification number, or a copy of ID.
Child in conflict with the law-admission number of the children’s remand home, rehabilitation institution, or borstal institution, or the Child’s birth certificate.
Review all entered details for accuracy, the click “Save” to submit the information.
A confirmation message will appear once the dependent has been successfully added.
SHA will verify the information and documents submitted. You will receive a notification once the dependent is successfully verified.

Changing a Declared Spouse
SHA allows members to change their declared spouse. A 30-day waiting period applies when a member changes their spouse for the first time before the new spouse becomes eligible for services.
For any subsequent spouse change, a six-month waiting period applies. However, if the spouse change is due to the death of a spouse, the waiting period does not apply.
