The National Police Service Commission (NPSC) has set a requirement for all Kenyans aspiring to join the National Police Service (NPS).
NPSC’s strict requirement ensures that only the most suitable candidates are selected during the nationwide recruitment exercise.
Applicants must meet a set of academic, physical, medical, and character standards.
Some of the basic requirements to join the NPS are as follows:
1. Basic Eligibility
- Citizenship: Must be a Kenyan citizen with a valid national ID card.
- Age: Applicants must be between 18 and 25 years old for holders of a KCSE certificate or its equivalent.
However, up to 30 years is allowed for diploma and degree holders.
However, a task force chaired by former Chief Justice David Maraga proposed that the entry age be increased from 18 to 21.
2. Educational Qualifications
Applicants must have a minimum of a KCSE mean grade of D+ (plus) with at least D+ in Kiswahili or English.
Maraga’s team also suggested that the entry grade be raised to C-(minus) up from the current D+.
3 . Physical Requirements
- Height: At least 5 ft 8 in (men) and 5 ft 3 in (women).
- BMI (Body Mass Index): Applicants’ BMI must fall within the healthy range.
- Weight:
- Fitness: Interested applicants must be fit.

4. Medical & Health Standards
- Good hearing and clear vision.
- No chronic illnesses like epilepsy, diabetes, or hypertension.
- No skin diseases or physical deformities.
- No tattoos. Applicants should also not have any tattoos or offensive body markings.
- Dental health: Teeth should be in generally good condition.
5. Pregnancy
- Female applicants must not be pregnant during recruitment and training.
- NPSC enforces this rule because the police training is physically demanding, and pregnancy could pose health risks to both the mother and unborn child.

6. Character & Conduct
- Good moral standing: Applicants must meet the requirements of Chapter Six of the Constitution with no criminal convictions or pending criminal action.
- They must provide a certificate of good conduct during the screening process.
7. Application Process
Interested candidates should apply online through the NPSC recruitment portal when the recruitment is advertised.
They should then attend physical screening at designated recruitment centers.
Afterwards, candidates selected will sit for interviews, medical tests, and aptitude tests.
NPSC will post the names of successful candidates, and they will receive admission letters to join police training colleges.
