Ian Njoroge, a 19-year-old university student charged for assaulting a traffic police officer has issued an apology to the government and the officer.
Speaking during a meeting with former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and his family, Ian expressed his regret over his actions, saying that it was a big mistake.
He pleaded with the traffic officer, Jacob Ogembo and other members of the police force to forgive him, even as he began a new journey of transformation.
“I would like to take this chance to offer an apology to the state and to Jacob Ogendo. I am really sorry, and it will never happen again,” he said.
Ian Njoroge was accused of attacking a traffic police officer along Kamiti Road in Kasarani. He was charged with robbery with violence, grievous harm and resisting arrest after the Sunday, June 2, incident.

Ian Njoroge’s Parents Apologize for the Assault
At the same time, Ian’s mother Ruth Nyambura Mbaraga issued an apology to the National Police Service (NPS), appealing to them to forgive her son.
“In support of My son, I want to say sorry to the police force and particularly to Jacob Ogendo. I want to apologize in support of Ian. To you Mike Sonko, thank you again for coming in when I needed that help the most,” she said.
On the other hand, Ian’s father asked police officers to forgive the 19-year-old noting that he was indeed sorry for what he did.
“On behalf of my son, I apologize to all police officers and ask that they forgive this child,” he said.
Sonko asked Kenyans to extend grace to Ian, noting that the parents were taking him to Nairobi Women’s Hospital for checkup and that he would organize counseling services.
“The mistake happened, and we cannot change that. Some of us have parents and we know that children make mistakes. We’re not forcing Ian to apologize, but we have spoken to him, and he regrets what he did.”
“He has assured me that it will not happen again. Going forward I will mentor him,” the former Governor said.

Ian Njoroge Released
Njoroge was on Friday, June 7, 2024, freed on a Ksh700, 000 bond at the Milimani Law Court in Nairobi by Principal Magistrate Ben Mark Ekhubi.
His release came despite an argument by prosecution lawyers that his release would put him in imminent danger given his relationship with the police.
However, Milimani Senior Principal Magistrate stated that the argument that he will be in imminent danger if released was a “ghastly thought” coming from the police.
“The allegations that Ian Njoroge should not be released on bail and or bond because he is a flight risk is plausible since it is not supported by any evidence,” the magistrate said.
