The billionaire Kenyatta family, recognised as Kenya’s largest landholders, is one of the most prominent political and business dynasties.
The family’s prominence began with Jomo Kenyatta, Kenya’s founding President (1964–1978).
His son, Uhuru Kenyatta, served as Kenya’s fourth President (2013–2022). Several other family members have held public positions or managed major business interests.
The Kenyatta family controls one of the largest private land portfolios in Kenya, with estimates placing the total holding at more than 500,000 acres spread across key agricultural and pastoral regions.
Estates include significant ranches, tea plantations, sisal farms, dairy hubs, and mixed-use developments, forming a multibillion-dollar land empire accumulated over several decades.
Central Kenya: Major Estates in Kiambu County
In Central Kenya, the family’s presence is most prominent in Kiambu County.
The Kiambu ranch, covering 13,000 hectares, is one of the most referenced properties and forms part of a larger 115,000-hectare portfolio attributed to Mama Ngina Kenyatta.
This block includes tea plantations and widespread agricultural land.
Northlands City in Ruiru is another key holding, covering 11,576 acres.
The land is zoned for residential, industrial, logistics, conservation, and agricultural use and hosts major installations such as Brookside Dairies.
Additional parcels in the Brookside and Peponi area, including land occupied by educational and institutional facilities, fall within the more expansive Northlands acreage.
