The Nyeri County Internship Program is offering young graduates an opportunity to gain hands-on experience and exposure in their respective fields.
Launched in 2018, the program has successfully equipped over 900 graduates with practical skills, networking opportunities, and professional development, positioning them for future career success.
According to the County Governor Mwalimu Mutahi Kahiga, the program was established to address the challenges young graduates face in securing employment because lack of experience.
“The success of the program is indicated by the number of interns who: High number that completes the program, number that exits on getting jobs before completing, and over 100 beneficiaries employed by the County Government of Nyeri,” stated the governor.
200 interns are recruited from degree, diploma, and certificate programs every year to serve in various county departments.
The internship provides a structured environment where interns apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, preparing them for the competitive job market.

Interns Who Have Gone Through the Nyeri County Program
Since its inception, five cohorts have completed the program, with many of the participants securing employment before their internship ends.
Moreover, over 100 beneficiaries have been absorbed into the Nyeri County Government workforce.
The first batch of interns was recruited in 2018 and completed the program in 2019, with 160 participants successfully finishing.
Furthermore, the second batch, recruited in 2020, completed their training in 2021, with 183 graduates. The third cohort, brought in 2021, ended in 2022 with 188 successful participants.
Currently, the sixth batch, recruited in February 2025 has started the internship. Out of the 200 recruits, 181 have reported, while two individuals declined the opportunity.

Internship Stipend and Benefits
To facilitate the interns’ transition into the workforce, the County Government of Nyeri provides a monthly stipend based on educational qualifications.
Degree holders receive a monthly stipend of Ksh12,000, while Diploma and certificate holders receive Ksh11,000 and Ksh10,000 respectively per month.
This financial support enables the interns to meet basic needs, reducing the financial strain often associated with unpaid internships.
During the launch of the sixth cohort, the county boss reaffirmed the county’s commitment to youth empowerment.
He explained that the program is an investment in the future of Nyeri, equipping young people with relevant skills and fostering a culture of professionalism and discipline.
“Internships play a crucial role in shaping the future of our youth. They provide a unique opportunity for young minds to apply their academic knowledge in real-world settings, gain valuable work experience, and develop essential skills that will serve them well in their future careers.
“Internships also foster a sense of responsibility, discipline and professionalism, which are vital attributes in today’s competitive job market,” said Governor Kahiga.
