Veteran gynaecologist and Nairobi Hospital director Dr. Job Obwaka died on Friday evening, May 1, after he was rushed unconscious to Nairobi Hospital.
Until his demise, Dr. Obwaka was a renowned gynaecologist and obstetrician, and a dedicated member of the Nairobi Hospital Board.
In an obituary published on Wednesday, May 6, details of his life, career, and family were shared, shedding light on his wife, children, and siblings.
Dr. Obwaka was the son of the late Elly Masakhwe and the late Filister Abiero.
The gynaecologist was married to two wives, Everrose Chemtai Obwaka and the late Florence Atenya Obwaka.

He was the father of seven children: Elly Masakhwe, Debora Abiero, Gerald Chesumba, Gloria Sheunda, Tony Wanga, Philly Abiero, and Dr. Chris Obwaka.
He was also a grandfather of nine grandchildren: Keenan, Brandon, Miguel, Adrian, Noah, Kelani, Moraa, Evie, and Bellarose.
In addition, Dr. Obwaka was one of 10 siblings, six of whom are deceased and four of whom are still alive.
He was a brother to Aggrey Obwaka, the late Grace Auma, Zedekiah Mukamba, the late John Okoth, the late Ruth Atieno, the late Charles Onyango, the late Enock Oduor, Dr. William Obwaka, Anna Odembo, and the late Lydia Were.
“He was a loving uncle, cousin, colleague, and friend to many. His passing leaves a void that cannot be filled,” read part of the obituary.
Funeral meetings will be held at CITAM Valley Road on Wednesday, May 6; Thursday, May 7; Friday, May 8; and Monday, May 11, starting at 5:30 pm.
The memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 13, from 10:00 am at CITAM Valley Road.
The cortege will leave Lee Funeral Home on Thursday, May 14, before his body is laid to rest on Friday, May 15, 2026, at Musanda village in Mumias.
The family drew comfort from the Bible, quoting 1 Thessalonians 4:13–14. “For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so, through Jesus, God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep.”
“May the Lord grant us comfort, and may his soul rest in eternal peace,” the obituary read further.

Woman Arrest in Connection with Medic’s Death
Police on Saturday, May 3, had arrested a 45-year-old woman believed to have been the last person seen with veteran gynecologist and Nairobi Hospital director Dr. Job Obwaka before his death.
The suspect, identified as Beatrice Wangare, was taken into police custody on Saturday morning, May 2, as a person of interest following the sudden death of the medic.
A report filed by security officers at Nairobi Hospital states that Dr. Job Obwaka was brought to the facility in an ambulance at around 7:00 pm on Friday after collapsing in Kitengela.
The report adds that the 83-year-old had gone on personal errands in the company of Wangare, who is believed to be a business associate.

Autopsy Reveals Dr Job Obwaka Died of Cardiac Arrest Despite Poison Calims
An autopsy conducted on Tuesday, May 5, at Lee Funeral Home found that Dr. Obwaka died of cardiac arrest.
Family representative Joseph Ndungu said the cardiac arrest was linked to a heart condition.
Ndungu also confirmed the findings, noting that further examinations would still be undertaken to provide more clarity on what led to the fatal episode.
“The family was in agreement with the findings of the examination; however, a toxicology report is still being conducted to determine the exact cause,” Ndungu said.
Investigators had earlier informed the court that they are probing a possible poisoning in the death of the 83-year-old medic. Police told the court that suspected poisoning is among the lines of inquiry into the death of the veteran obstetrician and gynaecologist.
According to an affidavit filed in court by Sergeant Rhoda Nzioka from the DCI headquarters, samples collected from a residence where Dr. Obwaka had been prior to his collapse will be sent to the Government Chemist for toxicological analysis.
