The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has set strict punctuality requirements for candidates sitting the 2026 Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, including conditions under which latecomers may be allowed to sit a paper.
Under the examination guidelines, latecomers must give the supervisor a satisfactory explanation.
Those who arrive more than 30 minutes after an examination has started may sit the paper only under exceptional circumstances.
The rule is outlined in KNEC’s 2026 KCSE examination timetable, instructions and guidelines, which also specify when candidates should be seated and the time allocated to each paper.
How Late Can a KCSE Candidate Arrive?
KNEC’s instructions state that a late-arriving candidate must provide the examination supervisor with a satisfactory reason.

Candidates more than half an hour late face stricter conditions, as admission is permitted only in exceptional circumstances.
This means candidates should not treat the first 30 minutes of an examination as an official grace period.
Arriving within that window does not remove the requirement to explain the delay, while arriving after the 30-minute mark does not guarantee admission, even if the candidate eventually reaches the examination centre.
The guidelines do not list every circumstance that qualifies as exceptional.
Candidates who experience an unexpected delay should report to the supervisor immediately upon arrival and explain what happened.
What Time Should Candidates Be Seated?
KNEC requires candidates to present themselves for security checks outside the examination room and be seated at their desks 15 minutes before the scheduled start of each paper.
For an examination scheduled to begin at 8 am, candidates should therefore be seated by 7.45 am.
For a paper starting at 2 pm, they should be seated by 1.45 pm.
The requirement means candidates must plan their arrival around the seating deadline rather than the examination’s starting time.
Reaching the school compound shortly before a paper begins may leave insufficient time to complete security checks and enter the examination room.
Candidates should confirm their examination centre and room arrangements with their schools before the examination day.
When Do the 2026 KCSE Papers Start?
According to the official 2026 KCSE timetable, first-session papers begin at 8 am, while second-session papers start at 2 pm, as indicated against the respective papers.
However, candidates should check the timetable for the specific date and subject because the examination schedule includes oral, practical and other papers with individual arrangements.
The timetable, rather than a general assumption about session times, should guide candidates.
KNEC also states that the timetable indicates the duration allocated to each paper.

If there is a discrepancy between the timetable and the question paper, the time stated on the question paper takes precedence.
Do Late Candidates Get Extra Time?
KNEC’s 2026 instructions state that no extra time is to be allowed beyond the prescribed duration of an examination paper.
The rule matters for candidates admitted late.
Permission to sit a paper under exceptional circumstances does not mean the candidate is automatically entitled to additional minutes to compensate for time lost.
The time allocated to the examination remains governed by KNEC’s instructions.
Candidates must therefore make every effort to arrive before the scheduled start rather than rely on a possible late admission.
For KCSE 2026, candidates may not carry wristwatches into the examination room.
KNEC specifically lists wristwatches among the prohibited items, alongside mobile phones and programmable calculators.
This means smartwatches, digital watches, analogue watches and any watch worn on the wrist are not allowed inside the examination room.
