National Defense College (NDC)commandant Major General in the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) Rashid Elmi has graduated from Kenyatta University (KU) with a PhD in Security Studies.
Major General Rashid was among the graduands conferred with different degrees on Friday, July 19, during the institution’s 55th graduation ceremony held at its main campus.
In a statement on July 20, economist and prominent banker Mohamed Wehliye congratulated Elmi on the milestone while reminding him how he overcame his challenges to attain his status.
“Son of uneducated herdsman/woman. From a very humble background to Airforce pilot rising to a Major General. Then today, you graduated with a PhD in Security Studies from KU. You should write a book my dear brother & friend of many years. Congratulations Maj General Rashid Elmi!” Wehliye noted
Isiolo Deputy Governor Abdi Issa also conveyed his congratulatory message to Rashid on his achievement.
“Congratulations to my brother Major General Rashid Elmi on graduating with PhD in security studies at KU,” Dr Abdi said.

Career and Appointment
Major General Elmi started his career at the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) in 1984 and was commissioned as second lieutenant in 1985. Thereafter, he qualified as a squadron pilot in 1987.
In April 2023, he was appointed as NDC Commandant. Before rising to the position of the NDC Commandant, Elmi served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor in-charge of Applied Research and Security Studies at the National Defense University-Kenya.
Rashid Elmi Education
Aside from recently earning a PhD in security studies at Kenyatta University, Rashid has two master’s degrees: one in Business Administration in Aviation Management from Moi University and another in Arts from the Catholic University of East Africa (CUEA).
Major General Elmi also has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the Catholic University of East Africa and a Diploma in Military Art and Science from Air University in Alabama, USA.
The General has done several professional Military Courses, including Graduate of the National defense College (NDC) – Kenya, Air Command & Staff College USA, Basic and advanced Intelligence Courses at the School of Military Intelligence-Kenya and the Intelligence University in Washington, USA.
Rashid had previously served as senior directing staff at the NDC and also worked as an instructor at the military intelligence college.
Major General Elmi has, additionally, been involved in several peacekeeping missions in Kosovo and Kuwait.
