Kenya Exposed as Govt Delays Visa Free Directive

All foreigners travelling into the country will still have to apply for a Visa despite an announcement made by President William Ruto that by the beginning of January 2024, Kenya would be a visa free nation.

The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority(KCAA) announced in a statement on Tuesday, January 2, that Visas will still be required for entry into the country. 

Further, the authority indicated that the directive will be changed only when officially communicated. 

“All travellers coming to Kenya from countries that require visa shall continue applying for Visas in the usual manner,” the statement read in part.

KCAA Gives Reason For Putting Ruto’s Directive on Hold

Giving reasons for the move, the authority indicated that changes announced on the Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system were yet to be made. 

The notice explained that once ready, the changes will be communicated to the public. 

Also, the notice stated that the system was in the development and implementation stage. 

“Following the presidential directive that Kenya will be a visa free country from January 2024, and Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) system is in the process of development and implementation.

“The digital platform ensures that all travellers to Kenya are identified in advance,” added the statement.

Ruto Officially Makes Kenya Visa Free

Speaking during the Jamhuri Day celebrations on December 12, 2023, President William Ruto announced the government’s decision to waive visa requirement for visitors coming to Kenya.

Additionally, the head of state said that the move would take effect beginning January 2024.

He cited various archaeological discoveries that in the past stated that Kenya was the cradle of humankind to buttress the decision to open borders to the world.

The President also referred to the Tobong’u Lore Festival which means “welcome home” to affirm the government’s resolve to open up Kenya for the world to explore.

“It is with great pleasure as President of this extraordinary country to make a historic announcement of the decision of the government of Kenya beginning January 2024, Kenya will be a visa free country.

 “It shall be no longer be necessary for any person from any corner of the world to carry the burden of applying for a visa to come from Kenya,” announced Ruto.
