Kenya Met Lists Regions to Receive Heavy Rains Over Next Five Days

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has released a five-day weather forecast for the period between March 22 and March 27, 2025.

The forecast comes amid heavy rainfall and chilly conditions in various parts of the country, including Nairobi and its surroundings.

According to the report, rainfall is expected to persist across several regions. Isolated heavy downpours are likely in parts of the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, the Rift Valley, the South-Eastern Lowlands, and North-Eastern Kenya.

The Highlands East of the Rift Valley, which includes Nairobi, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Murang’a, Kiambu, Meru, Embu, and Tharaka Nithi counties, will experience temperatures ranging from a minimum of 6°C to a maximum of 28°C.

The weatherman further predicts that some areas within this region will have cloudy and rainy mornings, followed by sunny intervals in at least two days.

These conditions will alternate with afternoon showers and thunderstorms, with occasional night showers expected in some places accompanied by minimum temperatures of as low as 06°C predicted on Saturday, March 22.

At the same time, Kenya Met has predicted that the Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley regions will continue to receive heavy rainfall.

This region includes the counties of Siaya, Kisumu, Homa Bay, Migori, Kisii, Nyamira, Trans Nzoia, Baringo, Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Nandi, Nakuru, Narok, Kericho, Bomet, Kakamega, Vihiga, Bungoma, Busia, and West Pokot.

Kenya Met forecast

Afternoon showers and thunderstorms are likely to occur in several areas throughout the period, while rainy conditions are expected in a few places during the mornings.

Some areas will also experience night showers throughout the period.

The average minimum night-time temperature will drop to as low as 11°C, while daytime temperatures are expected to rise to 31°C.

Areas within the southeastern lowlands, including Machakos, Kitui, Makueni, Kajiado, Taita-Taveta, and Tana River counties, will experience minimum temperatures of 15°C and maximum temperatures of up to 36°C.

According to Kenya Met, showers and thunderstorms are expected in a few places during the mornings and afternoons.

Other regions

The coastal counties of Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu, and Kwale, as well as the coastal parts of Tana River, will experience morning, afternoon, and night showers in some areas throughout the period.

The average maximum daytime temperature is expected to reach 36°C, while the minimum night-time temperature will drop to 25°C.

At the same time, Kenya Met said that rains alternating with showers and thunderstorms are expected during the day in some few places of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, and Isiolo counties.

Skies are likely to remain partly cloudy, with a chance of showers in a few places during the night.

The weatherman warned that the average maximum daytime temperatures in these counties will exceed 37° C.

Showers and thunderstorms in a few places are also expected in parts of Northwestern Kenya (Turkana and Samburu counties).
